I know I could browse the yellow pages but would really prefer a first hand recommendation. If you can recommend a flooring supplier for installing carpet would you let me know?
I am considering big box chain's to but I know they aren't always the best price. HD was double the cost of a whole ac unit replacement vs the small service company we went with.
Also - if you have any recommendations on carpet or pad based on experience. I am pretty sure we'll go with a berber or frieze. May even use (if box store) one of the in-store options - those rolls of carpet they have on hand - which include berber and frieze. I am clueless as to padding - it's been a long time since ordered carpet.
So please help if this is something you've priced around Houston please.
Houston - recommendations for good company
I'm not sure who to tell you to use in our area but when it comes to the padding, thicker is not always better. It's a mistake many people ask for or are talked into. There is a proper thickness for different types of carpet. Too thick a padding causes increased flexing, wear and stretching of the carpet every time it's walked on. In a heavy traffic area the carpet will deteriorate at fast rate. Whomever you use be sure that they know the ins & outs of carpet itself and are not simply installers who will put in whatever may seem good to you.
Someone who is a straight shooter and can answer all your questions is Tom Tynen. His radio show in Houston is on 610AM Saturday and Sunday from 8am-11am. You can call into the show at 713-572-4610. He can also be reached through his website at http://www.homeshowonline.net . I've taken much of his advice for many years. If you own a home his show is a must to listen to occasionally.
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way associated with Tom Tynan, his website or the radio station. (Just had to say that!) :)
Hope this helps a little!

Steve - that was a great post - thank you for referencing a local radio show on the home :D
I've been reading a bit about padding online. For sure as you said - depends on the carpet. Was interesting to read pads are often not put down on stairs as they make the surface a bit more unsteady - sometimes a felt pad is used instead.
I know this is a little late and you may have made your decision, but a friend in our part of town used A Beautiful Floor at 281-855-3400 to have carpet installed and was pleased.
Merci!
We were completely prepared for this as a 2011 project when WHAM, like ours, were overwhelmed again by costs of another old-home maintenance issue that came up demanding precendence. :(
Keep hoping and planning for the cosmetic improvements that actually have a return for resale ;)
