Indian paintbrush

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

I bought a package of these from Lady Bird Johnson's wildflower store.
Sowed some last fall but nothing, so I just added more seeds to my border.
What was your experience with these? I need advice, thanks.

It's a little quirky, but I think most typically would be a biennial. So the first year, all you see above ground is a little rosette of leaves, while below ground it's making a nice root structure. Then the next year it blooms. So hopefully you didn't pull it all up thinking it was dandelions.

The roots grow into the roots of other plants "semi parasitically". The folks at the Wildflower Center think it's best to have native grasses around for it to parasite on, but I've heard from other folks (TxDOT, maybe?) that it doesn't matter, pretty much any herby or woody plant will do.

Yes, they are difficult to get started.

I bought seeds fr WildSeedFarms in Fredericksburg this yr. I'm talking b/w 25 & 30 different kinds. All started faster than the packs said & that was all!!!
I was trying to grow them for a landscaper & none got over 2" tall & fizzled & went down. If all of these take 2 growing sessions, I am going to have more flowers next spring than all of us need!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
