Seems to me that most people that have only afew chickens name them, just as we all do with our dogs or cats. So if yours are named do you wait until you can tell the boys from the girls?
Do you name all your chickens?
I have to many to name but some do have names before I know what they are but the name will fit boy or girl, like I have black one I call smoke and one I call Jadee, could fit boy or girl,Then I have Henreeta,Raven, Sick Chicken,BABA,purple butt,BABA is the rooster,Raven is the silkie rooster,Henreeta is a barred rock hen.Sick Chicken is a black sex-link(she was sick one summer and thats what I called her so dh would know who I was taking about, she knew her name I would holler sick chicken and she would come a runnin)and purple butt is new he or she is a smal buff orpington that is vry slow to grow and was given to me because of that, anyways he or she had no feathers on its butt so I had to spray it with blue-kote and it looked purple to me so thats how it got its name,it is really growing fast now I think it did not get enough to eat, some days it looks like a rooster and others a pullet,I`ll try to get a picture of him or her and see if anyone can tell me,it will hard its very scared of peaple.
Mine are all named. I buy sexed day-old chicks (pullets) so they either get indeterminate or female names. There have been a couple of accidental roosters; one was fortunately named Francis which was still OK.
Yep all of mine have names......except for the ones that I know will be traded or sold...usually Roosters
Oh, poor Purple Butt. But you are taking good care of him/her so I am sure it will be better quickly.
I personally know I will not be keeping any roosters I hatch out so I am thinking I shouldn't give them names. Part of the don't get attached plan. But it will take me forever to name them if I do it that way.
So I could think of some names that are not very gender specific but mostly I would probably use girls names for my chicks. With this method one named say, Jenny could easy turn out to be a boy instead of hoped for girl LOL!
How old is purple butt?
I`m thinking about three months old
Shouldn't it have much more of a comb by now if it is a rooster? But don't go by what I say, I don't know ANYTHING LOL!
Yup, my Girl's all have names but sometimes I get them mixed up LOL
All mine don't have names. They have to be special or standouts in some kind of way to have a name. Gumbo is my big EE roo. The big WPR is Dumplin. The game cocks are Gigilo and Eagie. The game hens are Saphire, Orange Sherbert and Parfait. I have a game stag named Scar. Miracle is the BSL pullet that survived the dog attack. Then there is my Bantam roo, Trey. A bantam hen named Twinkle. 25 more that have no names.
Putting names on chickens can be lots of fun, and also very challenging. It seems as though some are very good at name game. Me, well I feel hoplessly lost, I do howeven name all my breeding stock. No names are given to those that are for sale. Keep in mind I only raise Seramas, gamehens and, now pheasant. Some of the names are as follows (Rusty the roo with Chloe, and Qtip) Don't care for Prince Charles so I went with (Prince Charming with Lady Diane and Ferggie) (Billy Bob with Bobbie and Betty Boop) (Booker with Murphy and Cinnamon) and Last but not least (Dot with Joyce and Cocoa)...The game hens are reds and birchens so They are all Spanish names (Mejoo with Mejaa) and (Rojoo with Bonita and Juanita)...Arghhh...Hay
We've named both of ours.... Claire and Alice. They know their names, but both come running when I call them baby girls, hoping they'll get a treat of string cheese. We once had a cat who had been named Amelia before we got him. One look at him, and we changed his name to Emilio. He didn't know the difference, but we felt better, lol.
I am afraid to name mine now because they could be roosters.
Hay I seen some pheasants at the chicken swap yestereday and they were beautiful, they had yellow heads and really long tail,I think the little amish boy said they were goldens.
Yes Green, they are indeed very, very pretty and they don't come into their full color until about two years of age. Did you notice any red on the goldens. There are two types of goldens, One is yellow on gold or twotone gold, and also the red goldens. I wasn't sure I was going to like them at first, but now that they are about four months old I really do like them. I will be happy when spring comes and they start laying. I have three hens and one rooster I think. I am busy tomorrow but maybe Tuesday I can take some pic and post them. There pretty easy to raise...Hay
Ok, I did name them even though I said I would wait. I named the Olive eggers Spraddles and Sprinkles. Sprinkles looks to be blue instead of black. Spraddles looks just a black copper marans to my uneducated eyes. If course those olive eggers are 3/4 BCM so I guess its no surprise. Spraddles even has feathers on its legs like a Marans.
The two real BCM are named Flopsey because its the one that doesn't stand up and Jenna because I want a BCM hen and I like that name. So I am hoping its a girl and well named and doesn't turn into a James.
Newyorkrita: Just wanted you to know my dear that there are two standards for BlackCopper Marans. The feather legged is the French standard, and the non feathered is the American standard. Both are recognized by the APA. To bad you can't have roosters as the BCM roosters are very stunning...Hay Here is a pic of one
Not a great pic but the only one I had...Hay
I see feather legs on your rooster. :-))
It is the French Standard that wants them feather legged and the English Standard that wants them clean legged.
