Smoke the black one can you tell if it is a boy or girl silkie?
Am I a boy or girl?
Hmmmm, how old is this pretty baby? I see no comb started yet. I think its a girl
It was born july 14th so about 2 1/2 months old, hope its a pullit
I have no idea since I couldn't tell with mine until he crowed! Your Silkie is sure a cutie.
My guess is pullet too.
Silkies are so hard to guess.. but I'm guessing Roo. 2 pictures look like a pullet, but the ones facing the camera are roo to me..
If he is with another rooster that is dominant, they don't develop near as fast when they are not the dominant one.
Oh yes, I see it. The rooster eye. :) They say Z always knows. We'll see how she did. I see her point now.
Oooh, Secrets!!!!! Please tell me about "Rooster Eye", ZZ! Inquiring minds NEED to know! LOL!! It sure would help me do some early culling and or separating!
ZZ, I want to know too! LOL
Oh gosh.. *blushing** I'm just guessing! In this case, I'm going by the hairdo and the comb... That "fast back" hairdo is what Catscan taught me is a roo.. The comb is kinda big to me for a pullet.. I'm not good with Silkies.. it's just a gut feeling.. I really am just going by the first feeling I get when I see the pics.. LOL I wish I was always right! :)
You are right a remarkable amount of the time from what I've observed on here.
:) Thank you for the vote of confidence!
One thing I thought of that I didn't ask here was... is this one friendly? More so than the others? That is a roo trait for sure.. The young ones, usually the ones that come over to you first are roos.. They are trying to win your heart early on.. so to secure a place in the coop. LOL
With my box of twenty-five silkies that I so intensely fell in love with, some had roo traits from day one. It's how they move and act and their total attitude. They were the first ones in the food scratching around. The little black ones were so obvious, even though they were the smallest, they had the little "roo" ways. They thought they were as big as the others and learned to be really quick or they would get pecked, but they still maintained that "I'm the man" posture.
Out of four white chicks, three turned out to be hens. I was surprised because I just knew two were roosters. They were the bullies. They ran together and picked on everyone else. One aggressive hen and the rooster joined ranks. I was surprised, because I just knew she was a rooster, but nope.
Like the DG'ers here said, they either crow or lay an egg. It seems it was more obvious when they were little babies than it was later on. At about five months the roosters started crowing one by one. It wasn't always easy to figure out who had done the crowing either, and I needed to know so I could move them out of town.
It's been a real adventure. I've enjoyed it. Thanks DGers. You are a blessing.
Who wouldn't fall in love with 25 Silkies!!!!!!!!! That would be heaven! Funny how they all have their own personality..
I think I have a hen that magically turned into a roo right before my eyes.. although she was always kinda big dumb and manly.. LOL
Smoke is not one bit friendly,if I need to catch him for some reason I have to get my granddaughters butter fly net.But after I have him or her for awhile she or he calms down and will let me look at her and pet her.I`m not one of those lucky ones that have tame silkies none on mine will let me catch them or hold lthem, they will eat out of my hand if I have bread but they snatch it and run.
Could be roo, but could be hen. We had one that looked like it was going to be a roo, it's a hen, so you can't always go by the roosterish look or roo eye. Watch for redness in the comb, the roos combs will start to get a redish hue to them. At this point it looks more henish to me, but it is still quite young.
Well, then that idea is out the window! LOL It's more obvious with babiez.. Usually the roos are more friendly and curious. The girls seem to know early on there is nothing to be alarmed at.. and just keep eating. They kinda know the roos will alert them to anything they need to know about. :)
Laughing out Loud: OMG, nothing has changed. ZZ's cracks me up. With my eyesight I'm really happy to say it's a chicken, very pretty though I must say...Hay
OMG.. Its OUR Haystack........ YAAAAAAY!!! Happy Happy Happy!!!
So glad your back Hay
So fun when someone "gets" my humor.. All ya all have to know I'm rarely serious.. I try to be a comedian 99% of the time.. :) Love ya Hay!!
Smoke is a girl.rooster was doing his thing with her a couple days ago
So you were right all along! Congrats! Always good news to have a pullet.. :)
Here are my 4 Silkies! They arrived today, which was sad for me , but it helped to take my mind off losing my little Serama!
Anyway the Little boy that raised these had soooooo many to choose from! He picked out the ones with Top knots for me but forgot that I wanted beards too! Oh well , he only wanted $5.00 a piece for them so Im happy!
Now My questionis this... I like them even love the cute little critters but have no knowledge of them at all. Why do some have Blue faces ( girls) and one (the roo) a red face??
Silkies are suppose to have blue ears. From what I have read the comb should be a mulberry color and not the red,I have a rooster that has the red and one that the mullberry color, try goggle and see what is considered right and wrong with the breed.I just love to look at them, they look like cotton balls walking around. That was a good price 5.00 each, thats what I have sold mine for at the swaps because they are pet quilty not show.I have all the colors now, can`t wait for spring to come so I can start breeding and see the different colors,I want some splash colors.DH is going to build onto the big coop for me in the spring so all the chicken will be in one building.Your silkies look like mine
Here is a good site to learn about the breeds.

They are darling! I like them without beards.. seems they can see better when they are not a full blown fluff.. They are so cute! $5. each is a deal too! I wish I had a few for broodiez
Eufaula,
I almost took a picture the other day of my bird's beak. It's so blue, and I think pretty.
Silkies do not fly and usually like to sleep low to the ground, though one lady said her silkie roosts high. Their skin is blue, their flesh and bones are black. They are known to be friendly.
If you need eggs hatched out, just put them under the silkies.
Yep I googled!!! WEll now my little man has a disqualification face! Am I RED! Hahahah! I got them strictly for the fun of it and for their wonderful Broodiness! So no Shows for them.....but I am really curious to see how cute they could be all bathed and Blow Dryed!!! I might even try Tye-Dying, that would maybe help them to blend inwith the Fallen leaves here......ooooh Camo Silkies!!!!
You can see the one in front has the mullberry color and the middle one I am pretty sure is a girl so she got moved the other day and the one in the back is the one with the pink comb or nose,he is the aggressor and chases the other one around.I got a new camera and finally learned how to get the pictures to my computor a little while ago,so next sunny day I will get some good pictures of the roosters.I love all my silkies don`t care if they pink nose or or green I just love looking at them.I am going to start a breeding program next spring so I will only breed for the right things,we don`t have shows or anything like that here in the sticks,I think if you wanted to show I would have to travel about 250 miles or more.
ooooooo yeah ,you can see the mischief in his eyes!!! The little pullet is so sweet looking. Now that big ole fella in front is the shy one huh!
I had taken the middle white one out and put in the other coop a few weeks ago was so sure it was a girl,I was filling up the water dish and HE was standing behind me crowing. So out of four whites three are roosters!!
Isn't that the way it goes? I hatched out three chicks last year, all three roosters.
Next time YOU pick them out.. and make sure there are no "fast back" hairdoos.. :) The more I look at this the more I want some silkies..
I thought for sure I had 2 and 2 but I have 3 girls and a Red faced Roo...LOL!! I so happy! I caught Mr. Rudolph doing his Happy dance and watched, sure enough the little blue faced I thought was a boy turned out to be a girl..Yaaaaay!
So now I have Rudolph the red nosed silkie and his three ladies, ZZ Top, Blitzen, and Sadie Mae!
So happy for you Eufaula! They are looking great too.
they look like mine, don`t you just love to look at them
