New Plumeria

Greenville, TX

Hello everyone I am new to the site and to Plumeria's. My grandmother got a cutting from a friend and it just bloomed this year. I had been asking her for a cutting and since it bloomed this year she won't cut it lol So, I called nurseries around my area (Dallas) and this was the last one nurseries had. I paid 35 dollars for it and from what I can tell I got a pretty good deal since other places wanted anywhere from 125-300 for a plant this size. It is around 6 1/2 to 7 foot tall and has from what I have read a seed pod on it as well. I do not know what type or flower color it is. Buying it this late in the year I guess i will have to wait until next year to see. I also ordered some seeds off the web as well and are still waiting for those. I would also like to know if it would be smart to start the seeds indoors over this winter so I can put them out in the spring. Thank in advance for any and all input.

So is starting seeds indoors a good idea?

I wish I could answer that one for ya! When I did plant seeds, I had gotten them during the Spring/Summer and just stuck them outside. I just wanted to comment on the huge bargain you got with your Plumeria! Congrats!!

Hopefully, someone will come along soon and answer your question.

Thank you indiana lily! Hopefully I will get my seeds soon so I can get some planted. I am really excited to see the one I bought next summer. I wonder how much faster it will grow next summer. What size pot would you or anyone recommend I put it in for next year so it will have enough root space and weight in case it gets top heavy?

When I sew mine (seeds) I sowed them in those small six-pack. I was told that those fragrile flat-seeds don't keep very long. So I sew mine when I collected when they were ripe. They need warm soil to germinate. I had one experience when they refuse to germinate over winter. They then sprouted the following spring. Just don't give up on them. I keep mine indoor in modified greenhouse among other tropicals. I water my plants throughout the winter while indoor, and that worked fine for the seeds. The plant once germinated, however, will take years to produce flowers. Good lucks, and have fun.

I have a question for you all, it is getting into the 50's here at night, what is the lowest I want to let it get before I bring the Plumeria indoors?

Virginia Beach, VA

Here is my experience as far as seeds. I bought 40 seeds from Thailand, 7 sprouted and 4 made it.it been 10 months and they are only 3 inches tall.
My 2nd experience is 50 seeds from ebay and none sprouted!!! I started them early summer so i think they were not mature when they were harvested. Those seeds were not cheap!!!

I have better luck with cuttings.---Belle

Thanks for the info Bellieg, I have already ordered the seeds so i'll have to just take my chances with them. Anybody have any info as regards to the temps?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

JR, in general. We need to protect plumeria from freezing temp. Any cooler than 50F. degrees, they will go dorman (asleep). Our temp. is said to drop in the 40F. tonight. I'm leaving mine out (for now) unless there is a forecast of killing frost.
