What to do about rice-like buggies

North Richland Hills, TX

I am hoping someone can tell me what some little bugs in my garden might be and what, if anything, I should do about them.

I am starting on a large garden bed in my front yard. I had a contractor come in and do the hardscaping and put in some dirt. I "placed" some plants in their pots and am now adding a great deal of additional top soil/compost before planting. When I removed a few (three or four) of the plant pots to lay down some new soil, in the dirt previously hidden by the pots, I saw dozens of little beige, wiggly rice-looking bugs (can't post a photo because my camera just broke two days ago). When the bugs are exposed to light, they burrow deeper into the dirt. I've never seen anything like this before in my yards. Are they some sort of larvae? Can they spread through the entire garden? Should I hold off planting before getting rid of them? Can you tell they freak me out a little (ok, maybe a lot)?

Sandyet ~ I believe it may be a termite. Hard to ID without a photo but they will stay in the dark and tunnel. I will try searching for a photo so you can compare.

Just spray on some beneficial nematodes and no more wiggly rice!

Thanks for the advice. I got some beneficial nematodes today (holding in the refrigerator) and plan to start applying the spray tomorrow. My husband and I also did a check of the immediate area to search for termite damage (the area in question is at least 15 feet from any wood). If necessary, we plan on calling an exterminator.
