A friend of my daughter's called her last night. She found a young rooster wandering about downtown. She took him home and gave him water and some food. From the photo I've seen, he's pretty big, possibly a Rhode Island Red. I'd take him in, but we are only allowed 4 chickens and no roosters. Do you think he can go to an animal shelter, or should I try calling around to farms in the area?
thanks,
Deb
Found rooster
Definitely call animal control and ask if someone has reported a rooster missing.
So far 2 calls to animal control and no one is missing a rooster. After I went over to take a look, we decided to take him to the nearest animal hospital because he's pretty thin and beat up. He has no feathers on the front of his throat and a major laceration under the left wing. He may look so scraggly because of the weather or because he's molting, I don't know. Someone had clipped his beak pretty short, so I know he must have belonged to someone.
All the way to the vets office my daughter was bukbuking to him and he was answering back. So cute. He has a lot of spunk, so I'm pretty sure he'll make it. Now I just have to find a new home for him when he's fixed up!
Tamberlin, that is so kind of you. You have a great heart.
Thank you Light for Jesus - I just wish I had a bigger wallet!
How very kind of you to help the little guy out! Do let us know how he is doing and where he ends up please.
Ok - Mr. Rooster is doing ok. He does not need surgery on the wound, just some cream and antibiotics. I can pick him up after 4PM today. That is going to be a problem. I've tried contacting several of the rescue groups in the area to find out if they can take him and no one has picked up the phone yet. Argh! I hope I don't get in trouble for keeping him in my yard for a couple of days!
That is sweet of you... Have you thought of posting on Craigslist? Good luck!
That's so nice of you and your daughter! I hope you find a home for him.
Thanks for saving the poor guy!
Update:
The rooster is home with us. The animal control officer was laughing her butt off when we talking on the phone finally, but she gave us permission to keep the little guy until he becomes a noise issue. Judging by how very "rooster" he is in his actions, I'm betting that will be sooner rather than later, especially after he sees my four EE girls....Is there any way to keep a rooster from crowing????
Due to the inclement weather (weather man says torrential downpours today), he's staying in the kennel in the garage. Tomorrow he'll go into a separate pen near the girls outside.
The poor guy is so bedraggled looking we decided to give him a big name: Monty
More to come on Friday with pictures.....
Update 10/3/10:
Monty is currently stalking me as I sit at the computer. He's quite the house rooster. We need chicken diapers and we need them fast!
There are some videos on youtube that have house chickens. This one silkie was so cute, it has on a diaper and goes down a stairs. Let me see if I can find it for you. ROFL
Hi Light for Jesus - I'm getting the little a diaper pronto! He really likes to hang out with his people. He even preens the dog's tail. One question, do roosters see the color red as an attack color? Monty chased Caroline up to her room when she was wearing red pajama pants. He followed her all over and she finally had to go and change so she could come down for dinner.... This is an adventure for sure....
Tamberlin... This has been such a good read........Love it! .. and yes I believe a Rooster sees RED as a threat..because of the combs and waddles of other Roosters! Please continue with your stories about the little Roo..... and hopefully his adjustment to diapers...ROTFLMBO!!!!!!!
