I just saw this plant for the first time at Emery's Garden (nursery) and it was lovely. Begonia grandis. Has anyone grown this?
success with perennial begonia?
Azorina grows it . . .
Yes, I was just going to post that. She brought some to RU. I was lucky and brought one home. Very pretty.
I've killed it twice. I suspect it's because I didn't get it in the ground early enough. I'm hoping that I can figure out a way around that this year . . .
uhoh.....forgot all about the one I got this spring.... hmm. quite possible I've killed two now also. ooops.....
Before this I had a fancy one from Terra Nova for a year or two, but it didn't survive last winter. I don't think it was planted deep enough, or it got shallow-ified by critter digging.
I have had begonia grandis for about 3 years and it is very hardy and has reseeded in my yard profusely. My sister has the one with red underside of the leaf and gave me a small seedling that I will winter over in the house and will hopefully get started out in the garden this spring. This is a picture of the mass of seedlings (not the ones in the pot)
Thanks so much for the picture Azorina. That's a great grouping there. What is the blue foliage on the right side? I'm thrilled to learn that it reseeds.
That's columbine leaves.
I was lucky enough to get a piece at the roundup at Lynn's, and it's just now started to flower! It's been in the ground almost a month so I've very excited. Hope it makes it thru the winter - in a fairly protected north facing spot.
I love that hardy begonia. I have two different types in the house but I don't think they would make it outside.
I also came home with this begonia from Lynn's. I have it in the greenhouse. Do you think that was a mistake? Love that plant and have made a nice spot for it but, was going to wait for spring to plant.
springcolor- no mistake if I had a greenhouse that is where the one from my sister would be....and anyways I have a whole bunch I am willing to share next year or for that matter anytime!
Azorina,
Thanks, will try not to kill this one.
They're supposed to be hardy down to zone 6 once they're established. I'm guessing that mine just hadn't gotten established yet.
