Tomatillos

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I thought I was growing a bumper crop of tomatillos but it seems they are growing the paper shell but never set the actual fruit. The paper shell just falls off. Does anyone have thoughts on what's going on and how I can get the fruit to set?

TIA.

I gave up on Tomatillo.
The plant grew like crazy" maybe 6' x 6' !!
Lots of waiste of space. Lots of beautiful flowers, but the tomatillos that developed were little and no good taste.
I will not try again.

Your fruit drop is probably do to heat. I'm having the same problem. In my experience tomatillos are even more fussy about temps than tomatoes. They usually grow like crazy in the summer but drop fruit; then produce fruit like crazy during Fall. Like tomatoes, they require a good deal of water. Beware worms like to crawl in the husks while the fruit is growing and munch fruit. If you see any signs of damage spray with Bt regularly.

The smaller fruit is generally more flavorful and preferred over the larger plum sized ones. I grow the small ones.

So I guess I should not pull the plant yet. I'll give it a few weeks into fall and see how it does. We are still having triple digits temps...........will it never end???? Ugh!

The plant? Hopefully you meant "plants" otherwise pull it. They are not self fertile. Mine have not been setting with temps in the high eighties to mid-nineties. A front moved in last night and dropped us into the seventies. It rained all night and has not stopped. Now I'll expect to see some tomatillos.

It was a volunteer so I think there is only one. I'll pull it, there's plenty of fall veggies to plant in its plane. Thanks maypop.....and stop teasing me with those temps and rain. I would so love a drenching rain right now. :~|

:) Started the day in shorts and a T-shirt, windows and doors open. The temp continues to drop and we are at 66 degrees now. I've closed the house up and am headed for an overshirt. We are socked in with fog in the mountains. It has continued to rain for most of the day Our first good rain in a month. Fall veggies must be loving it!

Sending cool breezes your way.

Thanks Laurel, I'll go stand under the evap cooler and wait for the breezes to arrive.

Ahhhh, fog. I miss weather. Phoenix is hot and dry. Period. Very occassional thunderstorm which causes us to stop whatever we're doing and sit a spell on the front porch.....with an adult beverage.

This is NOT my picture, a friend's son took it some time ago.
