Question Japanese Method

Montgomery, AL

I've been copying your Japanese method that was posted on another thread. How are yall's going? This is Fancy Trail just transferred to a 6 inch pot, and clipped with 12 peripheral runners put down. There are 3 other suckers in the center. What do I do with those? Are they allowed to grow as is? This is the first time I've had suckers that couldn't be placed down as a runner. There doesn't seem to be room for the middle three. Another question is what light to put it into? Bright again or not? Thanks!

I am not sure how far you are on this but you might find your answers at the end of page 1 and the first of page 2. If you are at this stage it says to move it into natural light. I believe it also talks about your suckers. I am sure which window you use will depend on your area. I can grow in a southeast window now but when I lived in the south, it would burn them up. This was trial and error for all of us involved. Sorry I can't help out any further.

I don't understand that part. I put it back under bright lights because it needs to grow more leaves again. I tried pulling the other suckers down from the middle and broke 2. How successful has this been for anyone?

Did you start with a trailer that was already growing out or a baby? It is easier to train a baby as it is growing. I stopped about this point because I was having issues with my other plants and haven't continued. I guess if some are willing, the ones that have stopped can start back up and it would give us something to do this winter. I think I would leave those suckers there but that is just my opinion. You can always start those two suckers that broke in another pot and use this method with them. If I understand this right, at times the plant will need different amounts of light depending on the stage it is in. It will still produce leaves in natural light. That is why it is moved back and forth. I know this is confusing and I hope I am making sense :)

I went back and read the article carefully. It seems it should go back under bright light after it is trimmed down and then to more diffuse to let the center growth go higher? Yes, I grew this from one little leaf. I've since tried several other trailers with similar results. It takes a long time though. It's awful when a nice sucker breaks while you are trying to pin it down. It leaves a bare area you have to fill in by training adjacent suckers. I wish there was someone on this site who is further along than me to tell us more.
