Baby Squirrels....... NOT AGAIN!!!

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

This is the second time that a rain storm has brought me baby squirrels. They were literally hanging from the gutter on the second story so I had to get a ladder during the storm to go up and get them. They are very cute at this age but the males become kinda mean around 8 weeks.

Now that is too cute even if they are "tree rats". We have raised many over the years, turning them loose. Here we have a large red fox squirrel that is more laid back, the wirey grey cat squirrel can be a handful. We are in the woods and this is not uncommon to find them displaced from logging or windstorms. At least these are haired out and a bit older. How many males/females?

Sounds like you been there before... good luck.

Ahhh! That is cute! (for now)

Awwww...

Two dumb males and one smart female. It is almost always that way.

My daughter had a disaster this week with two toilets not flushing. Did all of the DIY and gave up and called the plumber. He put his camera down the stack on the roof and found a dead squirrel.
Stopped up the flu. Said it happens all the time. A squirrel is a bushy-tailed rat.

They are sooo... cute. I raised a baby squirrel (male), years ago, he use to sit with my dad on the sofa and "watch" football. His name was Edwardo. He was really tame. When he finally decided he wanted to go out on his own I had to call all the neighbors and warn them about the tame squirrel. I had trained him to jump in my hands when I clapped, I didn't want him to scare anybody when he jumped to them. He wasn't mean at all and he was definitely male.

Juju, there's a special place for you . We are the keepers of (can I say it ) Gods creatures

Are you still bottling them or are they eating soilds?

Two didnt have their eyes open and one did. Now two have their eyes open. They are getting puppy formula and will probably be on solids and formula in a few weeks. At eight weeks, they will move to the sunroom or the 10x12 chicken coop. I will probably start letting them run in the yard as a soft release around 3 months.

They will get independent much faster than a few weeks .Haha I had a baby on a bottle many years ago , and some of them get to be pets, pests , and some , like mine ,get to be a teenager and leave home without even a goodby. Wish I was there , would love to help you care for them . I'm just a hopeless animal lover ..My luck , I'd kiss it on its face and it would bite me on the nose . LOL

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I want one!
Will you please keep us informed as they grow?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

NO you don't ~ lol They are wild and will never become domesticated. We've rehabbed fox, cat & flying squirrels. They need to be raised to be introduced back to the wild. By Texas law, you can keep these without a rehabbers license even tho they are considered a game animal in some parts of the state but they don't make a good pet. As DH says, baby anythings are cute (except snakes of course)!

Pod-read my post above. I've done it before, I have never tried to make an animal born in the wild a pet. They can always leave when they choose. But thanks for bringing me to my senses.
Pod-Did you get my d-mail?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL ~ when we raised them, everyone that saw them wanted one. To the degree of raiding a nest. It soured me totally. I will aid a orphaned waif but will discourage others from thinking of them "being a pet". Sorry... I did know you love exotics and have lots of experience.

Yep on the last dmail. Not sure if my wrist will pack plants this weekend or next. I'll let you know...

Do you think the mother drowned, or she was just off somewhere when the nest collapsed and dropped the little ones into the gutter? Squirrels don't seem to be the most maternal of creatures, but I wonder if she would still gather them back up if she found them in the yard...

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

The nest fell about 25 feet and hit the side of the roof. Our roof is very very steep. The babies slid down the side and one caught the very edge of the gutter screen. The second one held on to the first and the third one fell another 15 feet and landed on some leaves on top of the A/C. It was raining really hard so we couldnt leave them out in the rain hoping she would find them.

All three now have their eyes open. We had to help them go to the bathroom the first two days by wiping them with a warm damp towel but two of them started going on their own today. This is normally something the mother has to do until they open their eyes.

I have a reptile heating pad under half of the box so they can choose the cooler or warmer side.

Someone was just woken up from a nap.

He just crawls back to my leg if I put him on the floor. They usually try to wedge in your armpit. My belly is a popular hangout spot too.

You are very kind to care for them so well, I wish they weren't such destroyers around the yard.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I do not believe these ones are evil yet. I plan on releasing them far away from my fruit trees when they are ready.

Here one is nursing on my shirt.
All is well and they are getting really active.
