2010 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 9

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1125874/

Most of us will be wrapping up the 2010 hummingbird season this month. Although it is sad to say goodbye to our little friends, we have the fall migration and winter birds to look forward to now. Before we know it we will be watching that map and tracking them in the spring as we eagerly await their return in 2011!

Nice start Nanny. After weeks of just females & juvi males, I have a beautiful adult male today! Very skiddish though.

Good ones Nanny! Three is still a lot!

The pretty male at my house was dethroned by a vicious female. The male tried to keep all three feeders for himself, the two on either side of the backyard and the one in the front yard. He chased others away, but somewhat casually. The females actually stab each other, and the females chase away the butterflies, bees, house sparrows and doves. Today, the new reigning female even went after a big red-bellied woodpecker. The woodpecker darted away from her too. He knew crazy when he saw it.

I don't think I got any good pics today, but I was delighted when an oriole fed at one of my hummer feeders. That feeder is a cheap, easy-clean feeder from Walmart where you can't remove the flowers and yet I was glad to see that the openings were still big enough. I hope she comes again.

Like Elphaba said, 3 is still a lot. I thought mine were all gone, but I looked out today and saw a female at the feeder. I grabbed my camera, but when I opened the door she skedaddled - so, no pic to accompany this post.

I'm gonna leave my feeders up and hope to attract some Rufous hummers. I read that they visit Ga during the winter. So, I'll wait and see - just hope I am attentive should it arrive.

Nice shots Hack and Burd!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Hack, I just LOVE that last one. What a beauty. I had a rufous show up last year just as I was thinking of taking the feeders down. He stayed all winter. The only problem was that we had an unusually cold winter. Everything froze or stopped blooming. When I left for the x-mas holiday I had to get someone to fill and change the feeders to keep the poor guy alive. I was afraid that if he tried to leave, he wouldn't find any food. I worried about him all winter!

Burd, great photos -- love the tongue one especially. I keep trying to get one of those but they are too fast for me.

Thanks pelle and Elphaba

Elphaba, I'm hoping to get some wintering Hummers this year, I have never tried it before. It only freezes here a few times during the winter, I'll just take the feeders in while its freezing outside and put them back out just as soon as the temp goes.above 32.

BTW, my In-laws live in Houston and my son and daughter-in-law live in Cedar Park, just outside Austin (they both work in Austin).

Sandusky, OH

Nice shots Hack!! Thanks Elphaba...I keep certain settings on my camera just for the hummers.
The female is still here today as of 1pm.

Things seem quiet here now. They had been so busy and there was just constant action with all the chasing going on!

These 2 were really at it on monday. A terrible photo since it was right before dark and I had the ISO at 3200!

That photo's kind of artsy Nanny. I like it.

I just missed the two best hummer photo ops of the day. Had a stunning male at the front feeder. I should go stake out the front window, but I'm too lazy. Then an oriole made a feeder her own which ended in a really cool face off between oriole and hummer. Didn't have my camera though. I'm just glad the oriole is coming to the feeder regularly now.

I just downloaded a few pics from this morning.

Elphaba, how'd you get that hummer to turn around for you. They never mind me. :-)

They watch me like a hawk! I was lucky to get the shiny back shot before she spun around.

I don't often see the hummers panting like the other birds, but I'm pretty sure this one was hot.

Here are a few pics from Hummerfest in Rockport, Tx. I'm still down here. It rained today, so I hope tomorrow is better. Here a male RT with a Buff-bellied Hummingbird.

We have seen hundreds of the little beauties, but it's hard to take a picture that captures the sheer numbers of them. There are a couple dozen homes that have opened their yards to Hummer watchers like myself. You can just pull up a chair and watch the show.

This poor little hummer had had a collision with something and knocked hisself silly, but he recovered after a while and flew off.

Nice shots nanny, Elphaba and thebestmissy!! The one lone female is still here...same one, not shy at all... was as close as 2ft today while checking the feeder.

Oh my gosh Missy, look at all those hummers!! Glad your guy was okay...neat to get to hold one isn't it!!

I have a girl today!!

Nice shots nanny! No hummers today...going to refill the feeder one more time.
