Yeeea !!
Isn't this beautiful? I love my Sweet Autumn Clematis. Millions of little white flowers. Full of bees and so fragrant.
Enjoy !
SWEET AUTUMN CLEMATIS is blooming now
Very Lovely Drthor and Grits, I bet it smells great too.
I have to have one of those!
These are such a pretty fall bloomer and the fragrance is wonderful. It is one of those vines that we never think of til they bust into bloom.
Tell me, are they considered invasive? Do they need to be pruned to keep them in check?
the vine will attach to everything ... but it easy to move away.
It is worth it !
It will spread some but mostly from seeds I wish it spread more from the runners ..I saw one today in Spiro Ok. that was about 30 feet covering a fence the largest spread I have seen of it ..The reccommended pruning is to cut it to the ground in the spring and that seems to work for me if I don't prune in this way then I get lots of dead looking stuff in the understory ...Pruned to the ground seems to make it grow that much harder
Yes, I also prune mine in the spring. Down to maybe 2'.
I know that bloomingbulb.com has them and if you were close we would go find one in the woods and dig it up (my wife calls it stealing I call it rescue) My friend just down the street has some and she doesn't prune at all and they are still very pretty but has lots of dead stuff under neath
You will never believe this. When Mitch moved to Oklahoma he gifted me with more plants than I could find places for. One of them was a small vine and I just put it in the ground. Later moved it to one side of the greenhouse. Guess What!!!! It is covered with blooms and I compared it with plant files and it is......tada......Sweet Autumn Clematis. Guess it just need a little maturity to bloom.
I am thrilled to pieces.
That is just great Christi.
I think I told Y'all in another thread about having to move mine because it had taken away any decent sight lines in my backyard after moving it did not miss abeat bloomed very well last year and even better this year ..only bad thing that I see with the SAC is the Blister Beetles are attracked to it over and beyond any other plant in my yard..Such a nasty creature went to the TAMU site and read about this thing unti I did that I had no idea what a Blister Bug was and it is true if you smash one on your skin it will cause a painful blister ..It happened to me GROSS Joe
I just noticed mine blooming this AM but couldn't think of the name of it. Still waiting for the yellow bells to bloom. We aren't that far away from Austin but everything is so much later.
oh my I would love some of that Clematis. How beautiful!!!
Sure looks right to me ,just take care of it and wait and see
Its going to a new forever home. Forgot to add you have to turn your head to the left to see it correctly.
Gryts-still no rain Grr...
I'm so very excited!!! :D
I'll have to clear a spot by the fence. :)
If you don't clear a spot it will make its own spot. When I was out there today I realized that with the Clementis, the Lady Banks Rose and the China Blush it was like a jungle but some how they have each found their own space.
I saw this blooming a couple of weeks ago along the edge of a field across from the RR tracks! It went on for about 100 feet or more! I only knew that's what it was because mine bloomed this year and it was so pretty! But I only bought 1 plant and it didn't stay in bloom very long. Wonder if it's stealing if I were to go dig up a couple of those abandoned ones?
I KNOW its not if nobody sees you LOL and I doubt if anyone would care. Would it better to transplant them in the spring?
I don't know. This is my first year with clems. I planted these last fall, I believe. Do I need to "deadhead" the autumn clem for it to rebloom? I was noticing today it kind of looked like it had new buds on it.
I don't think it reblooms but does have buds that come on much later, mine is all done except for a very few late blooms..my thinking is to transplant the SAC in the late winter or early spring they seem to prefer morning sun ..Where my best one is now it is the first thing touched by the sun each morning
I have heard that Clematis like their roots shaded. At least in TX.
I am glad to hear you can cut it back in spring! I have one that is not living up to it's potential and is entertwined on a small obeisk. I was dreading having to try to untangle the mess to keep from killing it. I plan on moving it to a trellis or fence.
Great pictures!
Mine had an unfortunate encounter with a temporary yard crew. I have already cut it back to 6 inches. In less than 2 weeks it is covered with new growth. Now that I know what it is I will give it proper respect. I'm thinking they are hard to harm. Mitch left this little piece with me with no id. I have moved it 3 times and it never skipped a beat.
Well I think by now it should have your respect! LOL!! I am looking forward to putting mine somewhere it can show off.
My reading on this subject says the reason for pruning late winter/early spring is once pruned it puts on lots of new, tender groth that can be killed by a late freeze..Guess Y'all don't need to worry about that....
I really had no choice after it was hit with a weed eater. It is in a fairly protected area but I will probably put a little frost cloth over it just for good measure.
My SAC now has lots of seeds showing they look like small flowers but are just wing like things that help it find new places ,which kinda explains it growing out in the forest here...Think I will harvest the seeds if I can a fall sow those into a planter that has nothing else in it so I can ID> it for certain if they do happen to come up..
I just had to revisit this thread I commented that it was the most drought tolerant plant in my yard and now I am even more convinced of this ,mine has just stared to bloom so we are lkely 2 weeks away from pictures ..Several that I devided last winter I put where they would get watered as a by product of garden watering ,one has climbed to the top of my favorite birdhouse and I had no idea it was there untill it began to bloom ,now that is what I call a pleasant suprise
No winter protection and the summer has been brutal. Covered with buds. Can hardly wait for it to bloom.
they are just amazing plants ,my first encounter with them was along a fence on a country road where I used to walk and early in the mornings the fragrence was wonderfull ..I hinted for one start from the lady that lived there but she never did come thru but another lady on the same street gave me mine and now I have 6
I'm thinking mine is dead I'm hoping some rain will prove me wrong. It's in between a Lady Banks rose and a China Blush that seem OK. But it's up against a wood fence and I'm wondering if it just got too hot. I guess we'll see. This is the first year in 10+ years that they haven't been blooming or getting blooms at this time of year.
No blooms here yet !
But I think it will be happening really soon !
They are blooming here too making some of the most unattractive places a little more eye catching...I am looking for a little abandoned sprig by the side of the road that needs rescuing...When I am supposed to grow it it will come...LOL
