Couple of quick questions...

Marshfield, MA

I only have two Brugs and they both suffered major water problems when I went away on vacation. They really use a lot of water (root bound and old) so I put them in big tubs half full of water... Needless to say I drowned them and spoiled a great flush. Sigh!! They are not dead but are resting and most of the blooms dropped and "some" stocks/stems are dead

Can I do anything to help them and should I cut out the dead stems now or assume the will come back at the base after a winter in the basement??

Also if you would..... I understand that the "Y" has a lot of importance but does it matter what year the "Y" occurred? Can I cut it back to a "Y" that is not longer a "Y" but had been at some point??

The 6+ footer I drag in every year is just getting to big and I will go for bigger cuttings now if it makes sense. Will they take a heavy root prune before getting put into larger pots. Can't get much bigger than there in but I'm thinking I could use two old galvanized wash basins I have.

Thanks for allowing me to make so little sense but I think there is a question bury in that drivel..

John... well that's too bad... just as they were to flower....
once a plant is growing out a Y... you can cut 1/2 off and it will be like a Y on the remaining part... you can't cut this remaining one back before the joint of the removed Y or it will have to do it again...
so come in the car and i'll give you a pile of them to overwinter... how would a few big trees sound to you.. whatever you can fit in the car...or a basket full of dozens of cuttings... so many of them need t be clipped to just make it about the forest primevil here...
it'ss wise to cut off anything dead... as soon as it's obvious it is...

Careful Gordon.. I'm not on the other side of the world as you know and that is a tempting and generous offer. The spouse is always up for a road trip. All I have to say is "Hey do you want to go out to dinner?" Works every time and would also give me a chance to stop in on the Bro in Glastonbury or go to logees or sumpin. Don't be surprised if I drop you a Dmail.

Looking at you pic I not that one of the plants has obviously "Y"ed a few times. Would I be fine as long as I kept my cuts above any of the Y's??

Riddle me this as well if you would? There appear to be places on the plants that were at some time a "Y" but ONE side died at some point due to neglect or a tough winter in the garage so that region of the plant is now single stemmed with subsequent Y's having followed on what was left. Does the single stemmed part still "qualify as a Y??

As a side note.. The printed tag with the plant says that you should cut them back to 15 INCHES if you plan on wintering them inside. Are they discounting an early bloom or just making it up??

well gather her up and drop in.. I'm not kidding... I've many to many as it is... one is going out to day.. to Becky... my contest winner... a 3' tall plant in a 2'8" box... but for ones that drop in... there's more that don't ship rrrreal well...
yes.. once that plant gets to have a Y.... you can remove 1/2 and the remaining 1/ will retain that memory... of being a Y... and why not...
ok off to the PO
