A Surprise Silkied Serama Baby!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I may be a bit premature in my announcement, but I can hardly stand it any longer. LOL One of my tiny Serama chicks is showing definite signs of being a silkied serama! I thought it was straggly, but on closer inspection I see it's poofy!!!!!

These pictures are blury, but you can see the Poof on the white one, and the definite feather pattern on the lil gray one. They will be 3 weeks old Tuesday.

I will get Cody's camera to get better pics soon. Catsy needs to come and confirm it's a silkied...

Thank you both.
That mom is 1/2 Silkie and 1/2 Nankin.. she is an amazing foster mom! She is like royalty. :) Very spoiled.. :) Thank you.

Very cute! How big are Nankins? Or how small?

Lodi, United States

Nankins are very small bantams. They are a very old breed that supposedly survived because they are such incredible broodies...so in the past (and present) they were used to hatch game bird eggs (pheasants, quail etc) for hunters.

Biffy's mother was a Nankin called Rankin and her father was the most incredible blue splash Silkie, called Biff. I had to rehome him because he was crowing and I can't have roosters. It broke my heart. Then, a week later, Rankin came out from under the lavender where she had been brooding, with a single chick. It was perfectly blue and I realised it was Biff'f baby (Nankins are always a beautiful golden buff colour). And that was Biffy.

Biffy gets broodieness from both sides since Silkies are also incredible broodies. But we don't know where she gets her attitude. She has been brooding over at ZZ's for over a year now, and she is definitely The Queen. Don't even think of getting near her babies.

What a beautiful baby and a special Mom!

They sound really interesting. Can you post a picture? And something beside it to compare it with?
(I can never tell the size of some of the Bantams)

Lodi, United States

Here is the feathersite page on Nankins....they are a little larger than a small Serama...but smaller than the larger ones. Somewhere between a robin and dove. I love mine, which I hatched from eggs from Darlene Thompson (etrulah on eBay), because they are the tamest, most interactive chickens I have ever had. And for some reason I have always hatched pullets (except once)....

It's official, the baby IS a silkied Serama! Thank you Catsy for confirming for me! I do hope it's a pullet.. we should know soon.. it is 3 weeks old today.
I will work long and hard on a perfect name. :)

YAY, it's going to be fun to watch this baby grow up. Hoping it's a pullet for you!

LFJ, I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to alert ZZ's LOL

Actually I was thinking the same thing. The babies are cute but momma is stunning.

I named the baby Poppy... I've never had a chick jump and fly as much as this one.. Didn't want to name it popcorn.. I've heard that one before... so SHE is poppy.. (wishful thinking in full force)

I have a Poppy, she is one of my friendliest pullets - good choice!
