It has been half a dozen years since one of my neighbors put the axe to a huge hibiscus and dug out the stump. Every year since I have a half dozen or so bam booses popping up as far away from the original plant as fifteen to twenty feet. Round-up puts them down but back up they come or another is excited into growth by the treatment. To me they are the dickens to keep under control. I would just as soon not have them. I do not know if they are coming from the roots or seed the birds planted all over the place.
HOW DOES ONE GET RID OF THE SUCKERS?
Just noticed this question. The advice I have for you is to use a chemical called Tordon. It is a systemic so it will kill clear back to the roots. But be very, very careful!!! You can apply Tordon with a foam brush to a freshly cut plant or tree. As the roots that died decay, they will release the killing chemical into the surrounding soil. If there are LOTS of roots concentrated in one area, such as from a big tree, you may see some affect such as curling leaves on nearby plants. That will deminish over time. Tordon kills what it touches. It's a wonderful product for getting rid of volunteer trees that are too big to pull. Saves alot of backbreaking digging but you must follow the instructions. I live in a rural area and buy it by the pint at my local ag center.
Thank you. I shall now proceed to see if Google will tell me what it really is.
What kind of hibiscus is it? I wasn't aware that hibiscus sent up suckers.

I do not know what kind. It belonged to a neighbor. It was planted along a swimming pool fence some twenty feet set back from my property line beds which is where it pops up now.
I'm curious about it. Do you have a pic?
I BELIEVE my problem has been solved. I shall abandon this forum until Tordon which is Picloram proves to not work.
I put down a half dozen or so in early August using Round Up spot treatment on the plant leaves. The two and three leaf plants died down as expected however I expect to see more showing up sometime in May of 2011 at which time I will try Tordon hand applied to the cut off plant stem according to label instructions.
Like it when a problem like that is solved!
