coconut palm frost damage

Englewood, FL

My coconut palms were damaged during the 2010 frost (never below 32 degrees) and dropped massive numbers of coconuts. They are quite tall and two seem to be sending out new fronds. However, one has just two fronds, still green, but it keeps forming blooms and so far, no fronds. I have prayed under it and still hope for recovery. I see others in the area getting new fronds with practically no crown. Is there hope? I am in the Venice FL area, south of Sarasota and across from the gulf.

There's been lots of discussions on the internet about coconuts and frost since your big freeze in Florida in the last winter. Photos usually help in making judgements about plants, so if you have some then posting them might be helpful.

Since you're at the end of your summer those palms have had a fair time to recover so there should be significant improvement. Are the 2 fronds you mentioned large or still just emerging from the trunk? Coconuts can take a long time to show they're definitely dead. I lost 6 to a lighntning strike early this year. For a few months some of them still had green shoots out the top. Finally those tops fell off along with the green shoots. I never held out much hope for them from the start but all you can do it wait and see what happens. There have been all sorts of stories of recovery from Florida, so you never really know.

Even here in S. FLorida our Winter was hard on the CP. I have 6 and they all took a hit. First they looked wind-burned and then the fronds just up and died. A lot of the little buggers are still hanging on and refuse to drop off. The nuts fell at a great rate, but there are a few new ones coming on some.

To tell the truth, I would have not cried if they all had gone. I planted my gardens under them and the plants are constantly being injured by falling nuts and fronds. It was pretty scary having a nut land 6' from my head a few weeks ago. I'm also concerned about my little dog. If he gets hit, he will be a goner!

As long as you like yours, I hope they will be OK.
