DROPPED BUDS MAKE FLOWERS

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

This is Peach Parfait as it was sent to me...I'd mentioned it was so noisy last night ... with the dropping buds ... she alone lost a bunch of them.. 44 that I know of in one evening..as you can see there's maybe 4 times that many left or flowering today... so ... but I can sympathise with the more southern growers.. that have this as a part of the joy... of the perfumed evenings.. and knock out flowers

LOL, Gordon, thanks for the laugh! We can count on you to look on the bright side.

I'm one of those Southern growers, and if NOL doesn't stop dropping her buds, I may............................. grrrrrrrrrrr! Frustrating!

I think you enjoy flaunting your blooming Brugs in southern faces knowing we have summer dormancy problems and falling buds. LOL.Those comments you made in your contest thread about the jungle warfare you start among your plants was so funny! I love looking at your rooftop garden. There's always something new.

What is the name of that small yellow Brug in your last photo? I love the color and the form of the flower. The way I look at it, some dropped buds and some flowers are better than no buds at all. I can understand wholyhosta frustration because I experience it as well. Well, the frustration part at any rate. For the most part, most of mine are still suffering from summer dormancy. What few buds are produced are eaten by grasshoppers before they get more than an inch or two long. I still don't know what the flowers of the Goldenes Kornet x Margrethe cross you sent me last year will look like. Everytime she sets buds, the grasshoppers eat them. They don't fall off or I would have found them.

I need to go out this afternoon, weather permitting, and spray my Brugs in hopes of killing some of those eating machines. Then they need a good dose of fertilizer to get them ready for fall.

well... here's peach parfait that dropped all the buds.. I'm not real sure just where the 44 would have hung.. but it's a trooper... strong and resourceful... it would have found a place for them..

I liked the flowers that the dropped buds made.....I can make the same with my DB's from Clementine.
We had a cold snap with biting winds and off they came.
Thanks Gordon...it helps when others have a similar prob...lol

Really cool and a positive outlook on Gardening woes, Gordon. I love your Gardening style.

Yes.. SeaChanger... it's about as sad is the comming of fall... there's likely flowers to come from the buds that didn't drop for you...... come fall/winter.. there will be no flowers from anything... you're way south there in Australia.. do you get to see snow at all...
you list a zone as 8 b is this an actual australian zone or have you applied the critera of them here to figure out what it might be..
that's quite a large inland bay you are next to there.. your temperatures are likely evened out some.. looks like great sailing there...
can you import brugs wthout alot of problems.. or are there governmental restrictions...
Thanks Dana.....well Debra.. I suspect my " style " is much like yours... grow things way out of ones range.. that noone in miles has ever seen.. or cares about...and come winter.. pack them into the house..and sit with them... easing them through till spring... for me ...I attribute it to a strong bunch of genes from a mule somewhere in the past...

I think all gardeners are part mule. Have you ever met a gardener that didn't push the envelope? I was promised a new and larger "true" greenhouse when we built the house we have been talking about for the last 9 years. Well, we have been in negotiations with a builder since January, just signed the final papers and turned over the money to a title company who will oversee the disbursement of funds. On that day, I said goodbye to my new greenhouse. Now I have to repair and extend the old one by at least 10' or I won't be able to get all my potted plants, many zone 10, inside and hope that my heater can handle the extra volume.

Gordon, that is the American zone 8b ....as you said, it was the closest I could get.

The sailing from the 1st week in October to the end of February is full on and very competitive, as well as all the pleasure craft.
Of course the fishing boats are there all year.....a very popular pastime here.

Importing Brugs is far too expensive, due to Quarantine charges...so most of us rely on US. and German seeds..
Before the government got interested in what was coming in....we already had the basic ones, Ecuador pink and Knightii, plus a few others including Apricot Versicolor....so we had something to start with.

Luckily we had people like Dr Alistair Hay to pioneer the development of our Brugs, which he has done so well.
We are behind you in years, but what the US and Europe have achieved, has given us some great genes to work with ....so we are having a wonderful time, with a surprise around every corner.
Thanks for your interest.

I got home late August to a bunch of brugs with few leaves and not much life it seems. I fixed the automatic waterer, sprayed with Avid, fertilized and my Super Nova has many buds just opening. My Ecuador Pink that seemed dead has sprouted many new leaves. I have buds everywhere, but for some reason many are shredded. I don't really like the shredded blossoms.

Anna ... well.. if I asked mine now.. I bet eeryone would opt to have gone in yesterday...
Alarms are going off all around me... the front that just blew through.. and is still about wth lots of lightning.. strong rain and lots of wind... and for a few minutes.. HAIL... and not stuff falling.. this was a sloid block of weather... with it's entire area filled with hail... falling...no driven down at a 45* angle to the ground.,,
the roof door was blocked open 1 "... and driven through was the hail... bouncing around in the door.. and fallng 14 ft below to the floor...
most was almost as big as a dime... some were perfectly round... they are all looking to have missed this.. but they didn't... I can only magine how torn up everything is..

Gordon,
Sorry to hear that the weather is not treating you well. I guess most of wouldn't be prepared ahead of time because we push for that last perfect flush before everything has to come indoors. We have been very fortunate in that most storms drop their hail in Austin before getting here. Hail as large as golf balls is not that unusual.

Anna, Nice flush on your Brugs.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks. Will hate to cut them back......cripes, it takes a hacksaw. LOL Spose I could use it for winter wood. :>)
