I posted this on the Plant ID forum also. Can anyone ID this philo for me? The leaves are about 12-18 inches long. Thank you
ID please
A type of Philodendron.
tropic, that is very pretty, wish mine did have that color. Do the leaves stay that color or get darker or lighter?
The upper sides of the leaves are greener than the undersides. Other than that variation in dark/light shades of red is very small. It would be available over there. A friend from the US was here the other day and said he had one at home exactly like mine. He lives in New Mexico.
Your ID could be much easier if you knew were the plant was collected from originally? You may want to look at Mobot and see if their are any similar Philos on the Tropicos. It may not be a positive ID but sometimes I find some very very close matches that may be the same species as I have from their data base.
Just to juvenile to ID positively. Closeup photos of the stem showing the nodes and internodes would help as would a good photo of the petiole so the exact shape can be seen. If there are grooves, lines or canal-like indentions on the petiole that would help to be able to see. If one surface of the petiole is flat or has another shape that would be useful to know. Some are simply round but all information helps since it can be then entered into a database to come up with likely candidates.
The color of the roots can also be valuable as would closeup photos of both sides of the largest leaf blade so all the veins can be counted and observed. Lastly, a good photo of a new leaf blade emerging so the cataphyll that surrounds the new leaf can easily be soon would help. The cataphyll can be one of the most diagnostic tools with a Philodendron ID but make sure it is fully open and the leaf well emerged. If the cataphylls fall off or remain on the stem that too is useful.
The more photos the better but I can see traits of at least 10 species in this photo. This is one of the most common blade shapes in the estimated 1000 species in the genus.

More photos coming up. I got this (at the time a small cutting) from the GH at my childrens school. The AG teacher there had it and his was in a huge pot and it was about 4 ft across. I will go take more pics and post shortly. Thank you for your help
Photos of the larger plant will give more detail if possible.

Do I see a slight depression, sort of a shallow canal, in the top of the petiole?

I just tried to copy your photos to send them to Dr. Croat at the Missouri Botanical Garden but only the top one is in good resolution. Can you send them to me directly at Steve@ExoticRainforest.com
I think I have an idea what this may be but I would like Tom's confirmation. I need them at least 8 inches wide so he can see the details.
Thanks!
Steve
This last one looks to be a hybrid called Philo Majesty. I have several of the older dark leaf forms.
If you post them in jpeg just make sure the dpi is 72 instead of higher. When you post a photo at 180dpi it looks big on the screen but cannot be copied in the larger size to forward. Don't mean to get technical but most people don't know that and since I made a living for quite a few years with digital graphic design and photography it becomes apparent pretty quick in the trade. Go back up to your photos and copy any of the last few, you'll see what I mean when you get it on your desktop.
If you can't change the dpi for any reason just send the file to my email address and I can adjust it in PhotoShop and forward it to Dr. Croat.
