Is it possible to start a cutting now?

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

I was just sent a cutting of an Epi without knowing it was coming, and am not sure if I should start it or compost it.

Why would you not at least try to grow it? I do not understand.

I think epis would not care too much when you take a cutting, but I am far from an expert.

They root faster in the spring/summer but you can root them anytime of the year.

Thanks all, I have it rooting in my coir/bark mix, and I wont stop watering until next winter to allow growth.

Hi AnalogDog,
I root all of my epis in the fall. They seem to grow better for me that way.

Thanks for the note. I also take it you don't rest the cuttings during the winter?

Pawleys Island, SC

I really do, I start them in the fall and then only water them about once a month or every 6 weeks in winter, usually by spring they have rooted with no help from me.

Mine only get watered once or twice all winter.

I tried that, but mine didn't fare too well. Of course they were in a heated aviary so they might have dried out a lot more than normal.

Ohh. I keep mine in the garage over the winter. Our winters aren't nearly as cold as yours are though. It's not heated out there but they do just fine as long as it's not below freezing for more than a few days at a time. Then I will turn a space heater on the lowest setting for them if it stays that cold.

Mine are still outside, but it is getting oddly cold here, if it does not warm to an Indian summer, they will go in to the unlit garage Sept 31. If Indian summer occurs, they will stay out until its over. Which reminds me the cutting and the rips need to get watered.
