oleander and Houston

Cave Creek, AZ

Hi,
We will be driving back from North Carolina via Houston so that I can see the Moody Gardens. I just love plumeria and oleander.
Does any one have any ideas were I may but some of the doubles from turner or really breeder in the area? I'm hoping to buy several doubles in one gallons pots so there is still some room in our car .
Granted we have been mostly on the freeway I didn't see any oleander in Northern Texas.

Mickey, go to http://www.oleander.org and contact someone there with your question. The International Oleander society is based in Galveston. When will you be going to Galveston? You will have to pass by my house to get to Galveston and I have the variegated double pink that I'll gladly give cuttings of. It's in my plant trade list.

Oleanders do indeed grow in North Texas, but for some reason they're not all that widely planted. If you'll d-mail your address, I have a seedling from my cerise-colored one that I'll send.

What color is 'cerise'? I think I need one of them! lol
Went to Gal today w/Smock & we @ got Mexican oleander seedling. They are about a foot tall & so cute!

Linda, I just noticed that Mickey was asking about doubles, which this is not. If he/she doesn't want it, I'll save it for you. It's not as big as the one you bought... it's just a baby and will take a few (ahem) years to grow. Here is its mama. Old picture, but you can at least see the color.

Cerise? Hmmm... I've had one of those for years but called it watermelon. I'll have to remember Cerise. Sounds much more elegant than watermelon. But then I am country... lol

Nah, it's a deeper pink/red than watermelon. It's deeper than my watermelon-colored crepe myrtles.

Steve,
Thank you for your time. It was nice to meet a great Gardner. Thank you so much for the cuttings. I think I'm better off with the cuttings. I an't wait to get it rooted and see it's first round of blooms.
I only got to pick up one oleander in Galveston. It's a great place to visit with a gardening buddy not a husband. The heat and humidity almost did us in. I loved driving around a few of the streets there. I couldn't believe all the beautiful oleander. It was just wonderful!
We went to Moody Gardens, a bit of a disappointment, driving just around the town was far better. The hurricane damage is still very visible and unbelievable.
I loved seeing the giant jactrophia. And I found two plants I hae to add to my collection. One I have to get identified.I saw if first in North Vietnam in Da Lat. I think itis a type of coral tree. I'll have to send the photo to Moody Garden for idenifacation. None of the workers spoke English when we were there.
I also fell in love with the ragoon vine.I was luckie then and found a gardner that knew it's name and said they were very hard to propagate.
On to the Alamo for tomorrow.

Hi Mickey,
I am glad you are having fun on the road. Which oleander did you pick up in galveston?
Few people have rangoon creeper here in arizona.
Hi Steve,

Mickey, you're more than welcome. It was a pleasure having you stop by. Sorry to hear about your experience with Moody Gardens. I understand that they are having to do a lot of renovations since hurricane Ike. I haven't been there since but I will be checking it out in October when I go to the convention center at the gardens for a trade show. I believe what you are referring to as jactrophia is actually Jatropha.

LT, It was a pleasure having Mickey & Chuck stop by. Being the photographers they are, Chuck took a bunch of shots of my granddaughter while Mickey and I did the gardening chat.

A month ago I went to a small nursery in Houston that had 30 feet of a 10 foot high fence fully covered in Rangoon Creeper (Quisqualis indica); the single variety which I favor over the double. It was a solid mass of huge 8" to 10" clusters of blooms in various colors from white to red. Beautiful is the only word that could describe it. The owner told me that in all its years it had never bloomed so extensively. The only thing he could attribute it to was the abnormal and extensively cold winter we had. Sure wish I had my camera with me! :(

Hi Steve,
that rangoon creeper has wonderful fragrance too. I grew up with them in India. They love our heat. Mine has not bloomed for me but my gardening friends here have it blooming non stop in our hot summers. I also favor the single over the double variety. Both Mickey and Chuck are awesome with the camera stuff. Take care and please Dmail me if you want anything from AZ.
Happy gardening

Hi, Mickey. You're just now getting home???!!! Wow! Long trip. I hope your cuttings survived for that long. If you just got home you should have told me that you & Chuck were going to be on the road for a month. I would have mailed fresh cuttings when you got back. Glad you had a safe and enjoyable trip. Yeah, I have to agree - Texas IS an amazing state! It's like a whole 'nother country! :)
