High pitched cockatiel screaming coming from the back yard. Looking out the window, there on the top of the cage was a small brown hawk. He just sat there looking down on the small birds who were all cowering in the botom of the cage. When I went to grab my camera he flew away.
The silkie chickens were all hiding behind the dog house.
The cockatiels love to be outside in the summer, they chirp and sing and enjoy the heat, so I just leave them out there.
Never before have they made such a noise. They must have been really scared.
Now here is my question. Always I have a question. Is there some way to keep the hawk away? He's a small hawk I doubt he could carry away my full grown silkies and he won't be able to hurt my cockatiels in their cages, but I don't like him being around here even if he is an absolutely gorgeous bird.
Hawk in the backyard on the bird cage
I don't have any hawk advice. We do have hawks circling here but they are not all that common.
I have at various times in my life had all sorts of pet birds including cockatiels, Parrakeets, Austrialian Finches, Parrotts and some other types of pet birds. But I have ever had them outside so never had to worry about those sorts of problems.
I think the only way to keep a hawk away might involve criss-crossing with wires and shiny reflectors...Are the cages otherwise covered? Hawks are very visual hunters and might not go for what they cannot easily see.
I've heard hanging CDs or DVDs will discourage birds of prey; just make sure they are where the sun hits them so they will be shiny/flashy.
