These are Scaled Quail, also called Blue Quail (their winter color) or Cotton-top Quail (they have white instead of black top knots).
We usually have little ones in July, but not this year. I was glad to see that we finally got a late hatch.
The Quail are to the left of the black tub, there are 7 or 8 chicks.

Our Calif. Quail babies were late arriving too this year. Happy to hear you're seeing some now.

They came up near the back door to the sand box. I guess there is a bright side to not getting the weeds pulled before they went to seed - the little quail like it.
