I received this note from my niece in N.E. Pa. this morning. Can you offer any insight?
We have a hawk in one of the huge trees in the backyard that has been screeching for about a week now. There is actually two, probably mates. But the one is very vocal. Driving us nuts because it is so loud. I feel like a Hollywood horror movie when we go outside. It was eating a squirrel last night. Ripped it to shreds. Do you know why it would be screeching this long? Could it have chicks in th nest? It kind of seems late for them.
Thanks in advance.
Help with hawk question.
I have one around here thats very vocal. Last year he had lost his parents and would sit in a tree for what seemed like forever screeching in such a mournful way. He still has that same weird cry. Sorry I don't know why yours is doing it so much.
That's so sad.
I,m thinking young Red-tailed Hawk's if it was eating a squirrel...Id keep an eye out for a parent bird..if none then they are feeding themselves which is good.
Probably Red-shouldered Hawks, as they are more vocal than other hawks in your area. The young will still be dependent on the adults for food, so being even noisier demanding to be fed. But they will be independent fairly soon and get quieter.
