I planted a bunch of Clemson Spineless okra and am not really happy with its performance. I am ready to get the fall garden under way, but some of the okra is where I would like to plant other things. I am not ready to give up on it yet, but need the space. Has anyone ever tried to move it and replant in another location?
Relocating okra
Melissa,
I've been told okra have a long taproot that doesn't like to be disturbed. But, I remember last season, before I learned this, I pulled some okra and transplanted to my eBuckets, and they did just fine. They took awhile to reestablish themselves, but they did.
I think the key is to dig deep enough to get that root out with minimal damage. In my case, I transplanted from one eBucket to another, so the soil was relatively loose anyway and it came out easily.
Hope this helps!
Linda
They are easier to move when young, depends on the ht of the plant generally on whether it will survive. If you replant now, it won't have time to recover and bear fruit until the freezes hit. It MIGHT live, but the season is late for growing for okra now.
They're only about 3 ft tall now and planted in a pretty loose medium. If I lose them, it won't be a huge loss, as I am definately NOT happy with them.
Then call em an experiment, trim the lower leaves off and transplant. I like Clemson Spineless but actually prefer a few of the cajun var better, didn't care for white okra. Can't remember the name tonite, 'Velvet' comes to whats left of my memories without research, chuckl. G'nite
