I've got a cantalope, couple of bananas and a grapefruit going over the hill I plan on using for the BFs. I've seen oranges in the nector/puddling recipe but I don't believe I've ever seen grapefruit. Is it ok to use it?
P
Grapefruit?
guess I'll do some more googling since no one seems to know or care to respond

We don't eat grapefruit here so never have tried it. I would just put it out and see what happens.
I would think they'd love it. It's sweeter than an orange but still a citrus. You may be on to something with that.
Yeah, I vote just try it (and let us know). Some people don't like grapefruit as well as orange because it's got that "bitter" taste, but who knows if that's something butterflies even can distinguish. I'm guessing they just go for the sugar...
so far the banana and melon are only attracting flies and little wasp
keep us posted
my husband got a box of grapefruits, and got burnt out on them when there were 6-8 left. I had wondered about putting them out too. I just keep forgetting to do it. I have a plate hanging from a tree in a macrame` type hanger with fruit and butterfly brew. My fruit doesn't 'rot' ..... it dries up. I have to keep adding water to it to soften the butterfly brew and soften up the fruit. I hadn't thought about putting melons out either.
Grapefruit usually isn't as sweet as oranges and tangerines but out at the ranch where we're usually under drought conditions anything you put out attract butterflies. Here's a photo of a piece of ruby red grapefruit I stuck on a barbed wire fence for grins. Was pleasantly surprised to see the butterflies and insects feeding from it. The grapefruit was still green but it had been knocked off the tree - hated to see it go to waste...hence cutting it up and putting it out for the critters.

These are Ruby Reds. I'm not a grapefruit eater but tried it because he said they were 'really sweet'. Just don't like the tartness. Maybe I should put a little sugar on it when I put it out. Or some butterfly brew might help
