How deep - crocosmia?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I received some really nice crocosmias in a trade (well, for postage) but need to know how deep to plant them. Last year we had a much colder winter than usual and I lost mine.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

4 to 6" is probably fine, I cannot imagine Crocosmia not able to get to the surface though.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Normally I plant my bulbs down 3 times their size.
Crocosmia is like Gladiolus in a way, because if you don't plant it too deep when it flowers the plant will fall down.
I truly enjoy mine. I have Crocosmia Lucifer. It comes back every year.

Hi Woodspirit 1,

Just be careful which ones you plant as I had to take out one red/orange one which was very invasive. On the other hand, I have a copper coloured one with yellow flowers which is well behaved and quite pretty. Good luck

Lucifer may be invasive, but to control them from complete control of your garden, Cut off the seed heads before they are ripe or they will explode scattering seed throughout the garden.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Lucifer is not invasive in my zone 8a, Dallas, Texas ... i wish I could have more

well, they're in the ground, about 6 inches and I will much them heavily. Orange blossom, if you ever want to trade a few of the copper-colored ones, I'd be interested.

Hi woodspirit,

I would trade some of the copper ones if I knew how??? Can you advise, do I wait for seed to set? Let me know...

I think it's the bulbs that are usually traded. Sometimes for another perennial, or seeds or just postage. I'm not sure when the best time is, but I assume fall or spring. Of course, you have to have enough to want to trade, lol.
