cutting lily stems

Memphis, TN

how long will it be for a casa blanca liliy to flower again after you cut the entire stem for a floral arrangement

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

As with most bulbs, it will flower again the following year if you are lucky. Be sure to leave as much of the stem as possible. In my zone, my oriental lilies often do not come back. Maybe they need more winter chill than I have here.

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

Mine come back every year, often better than the previous year, as long as they have proper drainage. It is unbelievable what they can withstand in cold, wintry weather. If they don't have proper drainage, they will rot.

When lilies (orientals and asiatics and their hybrid lilium cousins) send up a stalk in the spring, whatever blooms they have are included in that stalk, even when you cannot see them. When they mature, the buds seldom open all at once, so if you cut off one of those flowers, the others will still bloom. If you cut the entire stem with all the flowers, that's it for the summer bloom season until next year. As soils said, you should leave stem (with leaves) for the plant (bulb) to recoup and get nourishment. That being said, lilies are so durable that I've had them broken off at the ground, stepped on and even driven over, and that's it for the year, but they will still bloom the following year without complaint. This is true whether they are inground or in containers.

Plantman, was this the first year for this beautiful flower?
