I was headed down to the creekbank, and saw the first owl in nearly 2 years, and this was my first summer sighting. This little Northern Pygmy Owl was not uncomfortable with my presence, even at as few as 4-5 feet away! I took 372 photos,( much to my surprise!) and all single shots, no bursts!
Owl encounter, up close and personal
Very nice tiger! He is adorable!
Great shots and such an exciting experience for you.
How how awesome for you!!
Got a love it when you can get all those shots...great job Tiger!..nice looking bird!
Yes, I hated to leave it. I came back to the house to see if my son had ever seen one up close. He joined me out back, and also got very close. The little owl bobbed his head back and forth at the sound of the shutter.
I've had them visit several times, but it was especially nice after so long a time not seeing any owls at all. Usually they are here in winter, as well with the Western Screech Owl. Once I even saw a Great Horned Owl sitting on the woodpile when I was coming in from putting the animals to bed. I'd sure like to see that again!
I keep looking at the images I took. Son and I both thought the head shape more resembled the Burrowing Owl than the Northern Pygmy Owl. In checking my field guide, I think today's owl looks like the Ferruginous Pygmy. Gotta do some checking, 'cause that one's not supposed to be here.
The tail on your last picture is a match for Northern Pygmy Owl.
I'm jealous! I would love to see an owl. Love the first pic.
Looks OK to me for Northern Pygmy Owl. Nice one to get!

I am in love with this creature. Tell it to come to my yard -- I have food.
They are very cute. But while they do eat insects (found beetle wings in a pellet) and small critters like lizards and mice, they also eat songbirds. The first one I ever saw here got one of my goldfinches.
Nice catch, A friend of mine has a pygmy owl on his property, but I have yet to see it, or any other one,
Thanks, all of you. I hope I don't go a long time without seeing one again.
