Best Soil "Recipe" for Seed Starting

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I've gotten plants from some of you and the soil you've used to grow the seeds or cuttings has been wonderful! What's you're secret recipe?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Stephanie ~ you haven't gotten plants from me but I use a peat based soil for seed starting as well as potted plants. It has changed names a few times from Sunshine, SunPro, SunGro. I will have to look at the bag to tell you which one it is now. I even use it in the wintersown jugs. It isn't cheap but well worth it. If you locate a small bag it is worth a try.

Maybe this will be a bump for your thread and you will get the answer you are looking for... 8 ]

No plants from me either, but it depends on where I am as to what I use, and the plant. I like the peat based soils, but occasionally my stuff requires a sandier composition, or more clay for the roots to seat in. I do usually use either a truck bed full of a local landscapers' stuff, or what Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmarts stock when in a bind, but since I am no longer driving OTR, I have my own compost pile building in the backyard, with lots of pony additions chuckle. She works HARD at turning her coastal into mulch for me. I miss being on the dairy, that green manure from dairy cows had cotton seed ground up, ureas, alfalfas and minerals, and my plants thrived on the manures I turned into teas, chuckle, I think someone else did a story on the benefits of different manures from different animals here on DG, but the soils do make a difference depending on what you wish to grow...

I use a Miracle Grow potting soil and add 15-20% vermeculite to it to help hold moisture. Their mixture has some peat in it I believe.

I use Miracle Gro Organic Choice potting soil (not garden soil) for just about everything. Sometimes for very small tip cuttings I do them in pure perlite, but they can't stay in that very long.

For cuttings, I use Josephine's recipe: 2 parts potting soil, 2 parts peat moss , 1 part perlite. It also helps to cover the cutting loosely with a plastic top( I use those big salad containers)If the leaves are large, then snip off half to send the energy to the roots.( also a tip I learned from Sheila via Josephine!) I always do more than I need b/c I still never get 100%.

Good tips always come from Josephine!

I have gotten one of the garden soils by mistake. I hate it being in the bag and so much like the potting soil.

Yes, I never even realized they were different until I started paying attention to the $.
