Sad at my house

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

We came home from church today to find a dog somebody had thrown out had torn into my chicken pen. I am missing 1 roo and 7 pullets. One of the pullets I found may not live. They were to start laying this month. I caught the dog and tied it up. If it is not claimed and my chickens payed for in 3 days I am going to kill it.

I don't blame you at all. Sorry for the loss, it is heartbreaking and angering at the same time. Hope the one pullet lives. Keep us posted.

How heart breaking. I am so sorry

Oh wow Cajun, I'm sooo sorry for your loss. I know that is hard to take.

I'm very sorry for your loss, it is always hard to loose any critter who has come to be a friend, especially in a violent manner.

Maybe the dog should be turned in to animal control? In most states it is not legal to execute a dog (however well justified), and it would likely be euthanized, but not put you in jeopardy. They might even identify the people responsible, and that would leave you a avenue towards compensation.

So sorry to.

I have calmed down and decided to bring the dog to the shelter in the morning. She is as skinny as a stick and friendly. Likely make a good pet for somebody. Not her fault she was owned by an idiot. None of my chickens have come back like I had hoped they would. I went to TSC this morning and bought 10 pullet chicks. 2 BO and 8 GSL. I would rather have had all BO but they only had 2.

Whew :)

Took the dog to the shelter. They were glad to get her. Said they'd fatten her up and get her a good home. The guy there said he had a boxer just like her. I thought she was an American Bulldog. She was lemon and white. I didn't know boxers came in that color. Of course I am not a boxer person.

I had a boxer they come in brindle and fawn, and sometimes they are born pure white

Glory be to God! One of my pullets came home unharmed!!! She has black legs so she may be a blue egg layer.

Richmond, TX

Woohoo! Perhaps the others will follow.

So sorry about the chickens. I'm thinking you are trying to mature your layers before winter. The dog is just doing what dogs do best...putting a dent in the wildlife. A boxer could be a great farm dog. They are very faithful and obliging. They are not usually overly aggressive. You can do a turn-around adoption, maybe get free a free neutering certificate and shots and re-adopt her/him and probably retrain it easily. I'm thinking you won't want to do that because you are understandably peeved. I really understand.

We have a rescued Plott hound. Unfortunately, we'll not be able to have any farm animals until she's gone. We adopted her because she seemed so sweet but didn't understanding her breed's natural killing instinct. She kills, and delivers at the doorstep, everything in sight regardless of size.

Dogs will do what ever they can to survive. If she was that thin, she probably didn't have any personal grudge against your chickens, she was just abandoned, and was trying to live. I hope the rest come home. Good luck.

She actually turned out to be a pretty nice dog but couldn't keep her around the place. I'm sure she will find a good home. The guy at the shelter said he had one just like her and sounded like he was interested in keeping her for himself.

I'm glad the dog has found a safe haven, but how awful about your chickens. At least your TSC had some replacements; ours only has chicks for a very brief period in the spring.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I was suprised they had them. I think God put them there just for me. All 10 are doing fine.

So glad to hear your hen came home, I hope the others will too. I feel sorry for the poor dog, wish people were more responsible for their pets.

Wow, you're lucky TSC had babies, how fun, more fuzzies. Good luck with them!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

So sorry about the loss, I saw an ad a couple of weeks ago that TSC had chicks again. We has dogs kill some of our chickens a few weeks ago. We were lucky, They killed several calves, a Donkey and injured some cows at our neighbors before animal control was able to pick them up.

Dogs can be more dangerous than wolves when they pack up becase they have no natural fear like wolves do.

Found another one of my pullets today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was across the highway by the neighbors yard. I walked up thei hill, dropped a little feed for her and picked her up while she was eating. It was one of my black sexlinks. I am so happy!!!

Lodi, United States

Yippeee! I love it when that happens.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

That's so great, Cajun!
