Black Witch?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

For the life of me I just spent an hour trying to find a pic of the Black Witch moth with its wings closed so I can positively id this pic. This one is on my Pecan tree, I disturbed it while turning the sprinkler on. It was hidden in one of my plants near the Peacan tree. What do you think?

The Sad Underwing (Catocala maestosa). And the Black Witch at rest looks pretty much like a spread specimen.

Just googled it and it definitley looks like the sad underwing? You use of the words "spread specimen" is not one I am familiar with.

"Spread specimen" is a specimen that has been spread for a collection. You mentioned you couldn't find a picture a Black Witch with its wings closed....that's because when at rest they are extended as if they'd been prepared for a collection.
