High Country Gardens

Arlington, TX

Has anyone ordered from High Country Gardens and if so were the plants decent? They have some items I can't find other places and I would like to get them this fall.

Yes, the plants are small but incredibly well packed. (Did you look in the GardenWatchdog?) I know I'm not from TX. I actually have one achillea I ordered from them this spring that is blooming the wrong color - I expect they will rectify the error, if it was an error. Their stuff will probably grow much better in TX than it does in MA! (Not really suited for this climate but I'm a slow learner.)

LOL They do carry things that will do well in wetter, cooler climates. I just want to make sure the plants are worth buying. I do not mind small if they are healthy.

I ordered a few plants from them last year, and they arrived in good shape and well packaged.

Yes! They are good! While in Montana, I ordered quite a few -- they all arrived in great condition and lived. Those I thought didn't make it after winter, they replaced. I felt bad, cause they were just really late in breaking soil come spring. I called to rectify, they were very nice. I had to leave them all in MT when I moved to TX. Would love to reorder and concentrate on xericapes.

Have fun ordering and planting, but wait till this part of the world cools off.

You got that right! Can you imagine planting anything this time of year. The one thing I like about them is the variety of plants they offer online. I am going to order some chocolate flowers, a few agastache and some others I haven't found locally. When do you think it might be ok to move some plants and add new ones to an established bed. The whole area needs soil amendments and I want to move, replace and rework the plants that are there now.

When?? Good question, I'd guess October. That would give them 2-3 months to establish roots before the real cold, if we get one, settles in, which is usually not until late December/January anyway. (At least for us on the TX/OK border.)

Cheryl, you might also check in the co-op forum and see if anyone's doing a co-op. Cheaper prices and all that stuff...

That's a good idea but I am really wanting some very specific plants so mail order is probably easier this time.

I'm curious -- what specific plants???

Arlington, TX

agastache-Acapulco orange
chocolate flower
centranthus rubra
some penstemons
desert beard tongue
a few other specimen plants

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I ordered a Clove Currant and Utah Serviceberry from them.
Both are edible and both are alive in this 102 degree heat.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I ordered an Agastache from them 2 years ago. It was very healthy and did well until the very heat of summer last year. I think I didn't give it enough water and it shriveled up and died. I would order from them again.

I've ordered the centranthus rubra for my Montana garden. It was beautiful. For some reason I haven't tried it here, wish I remembered why -- wondering if it can handle the heat. Would love to know how it works for you. Enjoy!

I will let you know. I grew them in zone 5 and never thought of them for here either but read a few articles that suggested they might be ok here. I love the fact that they bloom all season.
