How do I tell if my Hens are Roosters??

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

My baby chicks are growing up , I thought I got all pullets but now I'm not sure. Can you tell from pictures? These Are some of the Rhode Islands Reds

OK, That picture didn't work. I'll post some single pictures. This is one of the R I Reds

Pictures are too small to tell, but if the combs and wattles are larger and redder then you might have roos. Also the roos will tend to have thicker longer legs.

Okay that picture is better. How old are they? That one looks henish to me.

Beautiful, looks like a hen.

They are about 4 months old. That first one I thought was a Roo.

This is another I was wondering about. None are trying to crow but these three are in "Charge"

Woo Hoo. Thank you, DH won't tolerate a crowing Roo. LOL

Hi Picabo: I have to agree with smedg, they all three look like hens. Also I might add the americuana is a very pretty chicken...Looking good...Hay.

That last one looks henish too. They have henish looking legs. The hens usually have the plumage that goes down the legs more and is more poofy in the rear and the roos have less plumage and the legs are longer.
The first one looks like the tail may be pointier which could be a roo, but we have had hens that had pointy tails too. Other than that it really looks more like a hen.

By the way, they pose beautifully, I can't ever seem to get ours to pose so well, they always want to turn their backs on us. Those pictures are beautiful enough to be on a calendar.

Thank you for the information and the compliments on the "Girls".
They are all such pets they follow me around, If I whistle or make a strange noise they stop and pose, they have done it since they were babies. I know, spoiled. I am an artist and was making photos so I could paint them.

This is one of the hens that was making me think the ones with the larger comb were Roos.

I hatched out 3 RIRs. One was huge with a big comb and thick legs....I was thrilled to get two pullets out of three. The one with the big comb was the first to lay. I wonder if in some strains of RIR the pullets just have bigger combs.

Cat...It could be, I haven't had chickens in over 20 years, this is all new to me again. We are really enjoying these and looking forward to them laying.
I am surprised at how they have helped the flower beds. Their scratching and pecking is keeping down the weeds and bugs. I do have to brush the mulch back into the beds occasionally. LOL

(Zone 5b)

Your Araucana is a such a pretty color and I love the rich red color of the RIR's. It must be awful for 99.9999% of the roosters hatched!

Thank you, I do love the colors. A neighbor has a white Araucana Roo that I wish I could talk DH into. He is Beautiful! That is a sad fate for the Roos. Similar fate for most of the girls too.

Ours are pets too, but refuse to pose, maybe they are too spoiled so they now have attitudes, hmmmm

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I downloaded your first picture and must say I do not see anything in any picture that looks like a cock bird. The reason your birds look so good, is because they are really healthy. Yes, you have a fine bunch of pullets there.

The 4th picture, the one woth the flowers, would make a great puzzle.

Ken...Thank You, I was worried about what I was going so do with the boys. My neighbor got some chicks at the same CO-OP where I got mine. She said lots of hers were Roos. These have been well taken care of except for the "Trolls" (Creatures of the Night) that got into my coup and created havoc one night.
Smedgekies. I hadn't thought about that, some of the chicken photos would make cute puzzles. My son has a photo business and makes all sorts of stuff. I have thought of having him make some mugs from some of my garden photos, The chickens would be fun too. I'll see if he does puzzles, bet the grandkids would love that..
