I want to plant some onions to overwinter. I'm in the pnw. Where's a good place to order from? Also, any recommendations on varieties?
Overwintering onions
I'm a big fan of Territorial Seed Co, and Seeds of Change... they are both in your 'hood.
Yesterday I spent over 10 minutes and two phone calls to Territorial. I finally left a message that while they are a great company, they have a horrid phone system and lost a sale because of it!
The order desk did not know squat about winter onions so gave me the customer service number which just switches you around forever and you never get a live person.
So I'm looking for a new source. Will try seeds of change...
Gwendalou, can't believe Territorial's system wasn't good. I order from them all the time in huge amounts and never have a problem. I didn't even know they had an automated system!
Another source is in the east, High Mowing Seeds.
Well, if you just want to place an order, everything is fine. But try and talk to someone who actually knows something about the seeds/plants, someone in customer service, and it's a whole nuther ballgame. I was very surprised.
I've received good technical information from them, but we always get commercial grower assistance. That could be the difference.
High Mowing has knowledgeable sales staff. Try them. They will answer questions without a purchase. They are very friendly.
Johnny's Seeds will help you too if they aren't covered up busy.
I know how frustrating it can be needing assistance and getting none.
I grow Candy, 1015s and Walla Walla onions during fall/winter for spring harvest. They do very well here when planted in October. I know that's not much help to you because our winter days are much longer than yours and we rarely get a frost. There is one called Pacific Pearl if you want the little flat onions (cipolini).
This is a good company from what I understand: http://www.dixondalefarms.com/
