I love this one,it has a thick waxy bloom.
BQ Melon D'eau
What a gorgeous dark color! I saw more photos on BGI. Even her paler color is beautiful.
What a beautiful brug. How would I go about getting some seeds sent to me can anyone enlighten me please? Colleen
It's a real stunner, Joelle! ♥
:0)
Colleen I don't think there is a seed bank here but BGI has one.
You can try ebay but you never know if the crosses are what the seller says:(
Thanks for that info. Will give them a try. As you said not ebay though. Colleen
ctmorris, I've bought seeds from dergaertner, who sells on e-Bay. His seeds are fresh. He is a reliable hybridizer from Germany who will send the correct crosses. You might have a problem getting the seeds if they not labeled correctly on the envelope. I may be wrong, but I believe they have to be labeled as B. x candida. You might want to check with your Agriculture Dept. on the correct way to import Brug seeds.
Thanks for the info Bettydee. Colleen
I can't seem to find any places that have this one for sale with seeds. Can anyone help with a link please? Colleen
Colleen, Are you speaking of this cultivar or just seeds in general? They don't grow true from seed. You would have to import cuttings. This cultivar appears to be a Canadian cultivar. Check with your Department of Agriculture to see if you are allowed to import Brug cuttings and what you need to do to do so. Here in the states, getting the permit to import cuttings and seeds is free. The importer has to keep the cuttings in quarantine for 2 years and pay for an inspector to check on the cuttings' health every few months. So it can get expensive.
This nursery sells them, but are sold out for the year.

This plant was grown from seeds from dergaertner purchased on ebay. You never know what you might get, but many wonderful plants have been grown from his crosses.
theraglady, I tried to find degaertner on e-bay but couldn't. Can you point me in the right direction please? Absolutely beautiful flower. Colleen
Colleen, You have to remember that Brugmansias do not come true from seed. I'm not a hybridizer, but I believe the greater majority of seedlings are still producing white flowers. I just looked on e-Bay for his seed and couldn't find any. Usually, under location you click on the Worldwide button to find his seed. If you want this specific Brug, you will have to obtain cuttings or rooted plants.
yes.. as Brenda and Veronica have said you never know before hand the outcome... each and every seed in a pod is different.. has a slight chance of being similar to another .. ... and a smaller chance of looking just like one of the parents..
he's ...........dergaertner_1 you can search for him as a seller... and write directly with a question... like if he's got some comming out soon...
I've had some great results from his seeds... and some that were just fine also.. I'm still looking for the double blue one... here and everywhere else... no luck so far..... at least he's packing the last shipments in bubble wrap now... the first batch [ years ago ] looked like it had beeen run over by a steamroller... shipped between two thin bits of paper.. [ replaced by him with out a problem]
OH.. I'm growing out a passiflora fro him also... a triploid x triploid cross... a lovely blue of Temptation x Temptation... can't wait for the flowers....
you might also check for seeds here...she's another great German grower

I have had BQ melon'deu for about a year now, once it starts blooming it does not stop. The seed was grown by a very good friend. The first time I saw it I said it was the color or red ripe watermelon, that is how it got it's name. I have had so many seed pods start on this plant, but every one has dropped very early.
I may try to get some cuttings on ebay soon so others can grow this great brug.
If you do, please let me know. I would love to have her grow in my garden.
OH Veronica.. you are just looking for more food for your grasshoppers... they will enjoy the mellon color ... a gorgeous plant... is it getting to be grasshopper time there again this year..
Brenda.... she is a beauty though... great tendrils... knock out dark color... and to bloom non stop... that is an atribute for all brugs to aspire to.. I guess Georgia Peach is the closest to that for me here.. always with some bloom or other.. Good work there kid-o...
Gordn, Whst do you mean is it grasshopper time yet? They have been here since April! We just haven't had as many as last year because we had a wet winter. They have done some damage, especially to the blooms, but because their numbers are lower, the damage is not as extensive. Part of the credit goes to Ortho Max's Fruit, Vegetable and Ornamental Insect Spray. I have to spray my Brugs ever few weeks. Maybe having grasshopper corpses hanging on to some of the branches here and there discourages others from eating. lol.
HA HA HA Like the midevil wars where they would hang the corpses ontside the village... i can see it now.... glad you've found some armament in their battle...I guess you're the center for high temperatures now also... .. we've started to see slighty cooler evenings... and the brugs have responded with more of a flowering format.. starting to set more buds...
keep up the good fight there... it's the caterpillars here now... and always the mites... but we'll take care of them soon enough... I'm learning Judo.. more of that when I get approd to co-op it...
I have taken the cuttings, now waiting for some sign of roots Veronica. I will ldet you know.
Gordon, I am planning on delivering yours in person, just need to catch a break from work. Just got home from a 14 hour day.
WOW... AND THERE i WAS WATERING TODAY.. THINKING TO MYSELF....
Well.. there's no chance we'd be seeing Brenda...
I'm amazed... and so blessed.. just let me know when that unfolds to be.. SEE ya then..
and thanks...
Gorgeous color!
Thanks Donna,I had some seed from this on ebay, they did well.
Ah shucks! How did I miss that.
I am hoping to get cuttings of this Brug in Spring. I've added it to my paper want list.
Glad to hear the seeds on Ebay went well. I was so tempted to bid!!
BQ Melon D'eau has doubles in he background, there is a very good chance for somthing wonderful from her seeds.
Great job Joelle, I have not been able to get pods to set on min.
|Thanks Ladies!
I bet you will get your pods to set this year!!!!
This one is starting to bud, must be spring!
Good for you Joelle, I have buds on mine in the basement too.As soon as the light coming in from outside starts to last longer those brugs start waking themselves up.
Joelle where can you find bqmdxphenomenal seeds?
lol Donna,I made them last year! I sold some on ebay, and planted the rest.
Ah shucks....darn't!!
I think I got carried away in my excitiment, I wasnt sure how they would make out, so I planted them all! If I end up with to many seedlings I might be forced to ebay them. I planted a few hundred from different crosses. I want to see every bloom! Im not sure how these hybridizers do it,its like sending your kids away and never knowing how they turned out?? Anyone else suffer from seperation anxiety a la Bruggys? This must be how hoarding starts.
Edit = bad speller

I am proud to say I named BQ melon D'eau. Dany the breeder is a good friend. The Sunday morning I got the email with the pictures I told him the color reminded me of red ripe watermelon. Keep your ey on Dany's site Joelle, he has produced several more great crosses.
He does a wonderful job with his plants, I am always impressed when i got visit him.
I would be proud too!!!
I already blew the budget at his site this year on BANANAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If any Canadians don't know about the man we are talking about, google Brugmansia Quebec!
Just a a look at some of the Brugs he has hybridized will leave you drooling. It's too bad we can't get his Brugs here in the states.
Veronica, check with me when spring comes. I do have many of them, and do sometimes sell for Dany. I have been trying o give him a hand. Since I am in the flower business I am able to bring cuttings, no soil across the border. The only problem is he is so far away. It is a 12 hour round trip. I try to get there 3 or 4 times a year.
Most of the flower shops in our area bring all of our cut flowers int the US from Canada. I live just 8 miles from the border.
I do have a BQ melon D'eau for you, just ran out of warm weather last fall. I don't remember when the cold came so early or has hit so hard, -10 wind chill here today, and below zero most nights this week.
