Live in North Texas and want to attract hummingbirds, etc to my veggie garden. Have a partial shade spot next to the fence that borders the garden where I want to put something that would grow up and over the fence into a full Sun area. I've heard Turks Cap might be good.
Any recommendations?
Thanks -
JD
Hummingbird VIne
Turk,s cap is excellent, also Coral honeysuckle and Crossvine.
JD, I *love* those stepping stones. I agree with Josephine, Turks Caps would look fabulous there, with either Coral Honeysuckle or Crossvine growing up and over the fence. The hummingbirds will be very happy.

Thanks for the flagstone comment. I'm real pleased how the garden design came out.
Did some research on Crossvines and found that they are similar to the Trumpet Vine. And as it goes, I actually had a Trumpet Vine growing over that fence for 3-4 years. Had to take it down due the the stalks getting in between the wood slates of the fence and then, over time, thickening to the point of almost cracking the wood.
I assume I can do Turks Cap as a bush in that spot. Are there any recommended vines that either die back each Winter or don't have woody stalks?
Thanks --
You may look into Clematis. The #3 pruning types are cut down each winter. There are many varieties that love Texas sun as long as the roots stay cool. Viticellas are a type that are easy to grow.
Flowermound,
Your fence is raised above the brick retaining wall? How tall is the fence above that area? That's a great idea for a higher fence.
And, I could see how that brick wall could have been extended to create a ledge for EBs. I have 9 patented Earth Boxes I have to find a place for in my yard.
I'm currently taking bids to have a new fence put up, and that's an interesting design. I need a functional design that will multitask in my small yard. That brick works. Or, it could have been a simple box design that the EBs could sit on, but with flip lids on the front that could allow double use as storage.

All - Thanks for the suggestions..
GymGirl - the fence I want to plant the vines against is not the one on the right, it's the ground level fence with a trellis mounted on it. The wall you see to the right extends down about 200 feet and marks the border between myself and my neighbor. And yes, it's an excellent ledge to place my 5 Earthboxes. It also hosts my blueberries, etc currently waiting to be transplanted..
Hmph, I planted a firecracker bush once, dau decided to move it, mine came back from the roots she apparently missed, but hers died this winter, she gave up and left it alone.
I'll bite, what's dau?
I think dau is a "who".
Daughter?
Kitt, they don't understand that you mean DD or dear daughter. lol
Just another way to say dau!!! lol
Since I'm not a texter, I'm a little slow on the uptake. :-)
I don't text either but DG has taught me many things in the last 9 yrs!!! But I have to admit, I didn't know what DH, DS, MIL, & DD, meant when I came in!!! lol
Lots of times, DGers type just the first letters of words that they are discussing on a thread! I just looked @ one of Gymgirl's posts. Now, mind you I was reading the whole thread & then she said "EB". All of a sudden, my mind went blank. I just seemed to be lost in the moment & then realized she had just mentioned earth beds. & thus, "EB".
My mom says keep my mouth shut & let people think your dumb rather that opening your mouth & proving it. But I don't always listen to my mom!!! lol
Smockette, I get all lot of it in context....but think about it Dear Hubby isn't the only thing DH could stand for, and DS, what's that about! ;o)
Why aren't we in bed?........I'm goooooooing.
Dear Hubby is gone & no DD or DS. Now, how should I refer to my cats, PJ & Darla? lol
Good nite, girl!!!
