CLOSED: Willets? All of them?

I really don't know shore birds and can't tell them apart. Is this a Willet?

#1 is a Willet

#2 aren't, too short-billed. Not quite sure what they are, pic is too small

#3 I'm fairly sure is a Sanderling, tho' not 100% certain

I super cropped pic 2, but I don't think it helps. Here it is anyway. They were very small.

I guess I should ignore the range maps in my Stokes Field Guide. The map shows Sanderlings as being winter residents here but all the other birds that seem to be possibilities are also shown as winter birds.

It also shows this bird which I'm pretty sure is a Semipalmated Plover as a winter bird. Snowy and Wilson's Plovers are similar and listed as summer inhabitants but I don't think they fit because of the bill and leg colors. Does winter start in August?

I think this may be the same kind of bird as #3. Can't remember if it was actually the same bird. Willet butt in the top right can help with size determination.

Yep, winter is arriving for waders! The summer is nearly over in the Arctic now, and they're heading south; adult waders head south first, juveniles later*.

The super-crop of #2 does help; I'm now thinking they're White-rumped Sandpipers, and #3 as well. The adults of these start moving south in late July, leaving the juveniles to follow a month or 6 weeks later.

* A fairly good strategy in the event of a bad early start to winter, the young of the year may be lost, but the adults live to breed again the next year. Also the adults moving out leaves more food for the juveniles. Their migration route is pre-programmed, all the way to Argentina (except for a few with faulty programming, a few White-rumped Sandpipers turn up over here every year at this time of year ;-)

That is just fascinating! Thanks for sharing.
