I have yet to see on of the blooms open, but apparently they have because some have developed seed pods. Trying to decide if I should keep it...
Tonya
Can someone id this volunteer vine?
Oops. The seed pod didn't show up in the second pic and I want to clarify that the vine in question in the first pic has the large leaves. The smaller leaved vine is a lindheimer's morning glory.
I thought it might be a passion vine of some kind! Thanks Josephine. It is definately a keeper and I figured you would be the first to give me an id. You are always such a wealth of plant info. Is it a Texas native?
Tonya
Absolutely!! and rather uncommon especially around my area, enjoy!!
Thanks nbgard for asking and Josephine for the answer. My son and I saw this vine in the butterfly garden at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There were buds on the vine but no blooms. We both grow a few different passifloras, including our native Maypop, and thought it might be another species but the wooly buds were throwing us off. Now I need to find this one!
I hope to be able to harvest some seeds Steve. Check back with me in a few months, if you're interested, to see if I am successful.
Thanks Josephine. I am even more excited that it is somewhat uncommon. It may be more common in this neck of the woods, though. I had to leave for work before light this morning and probably will all week, so it may be a few days before I actually get to see a bloom!
Tonya
So far the seedpods on my vine have been sterile, they ripen but no seed, evidently you need to have two vines for fertilizing.
Now I don't know if that is absolutely true, I have propagated mine but it was from cuttings so all of mine are the same sex, so far no seeds.
Josephine.
Oh, interesting. That is good to know. At least I won't be wondering if there are no seeds in the pods! I take it this passiflora is not as invasive as one of the other varieties (can't remember which one) that someone warned about.
Well, I guess it depends, it dies to the ground in winter and I have never had it come up in a different area, but it is a fast grower and can fill an area pretty fast
which I don't mind. I have only had it 2 years so maybe when the rootstock gets bigger it might spread out, but I really don't consider that a problem.
Thanks, Tonya. From the sounds of it it may not be a self-pollinator but if it does happen to set fruit... :)
Good news (I think)! The fruit on my wooly passion vine has seeds in it. I did notice the the neighbor across the street has a volunteer in her flower bed, too. Maybe that bird made two stops! Anyway, I want to make sure I am processing the seeds correctly. I just took the fruit off the vine when it was a good solid red and opened it up on a paper plate to dry out. Should I leave them on the vine longer? I also notice some little holes in some of the fruit, like some little bug was enjoying them before I could get to them! Any suggestions about all of this Josephine? Or anyone else?
Tonya
I think you are doing it right Tonya so I guess your vine is self polinating, or maybe your neighbor's vine is a male?
That is very lucky, I haven't had any of my vines make seed, they are all from cuttings from the same vine.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine. I was thinking the neighbor's vine was helpful, too. At any rate, it was another pleasant surprise to see the seeds!
stevesivek, I will try to remember to send you some seeds. Feel free to d-mail me in a month or so if I haven't sent them. Is your address in the addy exchange?
Tonya
Finally got the camera out and it didn't want to focus on the bud. Looks something like that. Handled in a little and it was alittle stinky. I was hoping for a wooly, I understand they are not as invasive, but thrilled over this one. It is in a pot close to the house so the birds stay away so it shouldn't spread.
Dane
ps sorry nbgard didn't mean to steal the thread.
Not a problem Dane, I 've been enjoying reading it!
Tonya
Tonya, is you vine making seeds?
Josephine.
Yep, I have a bunch drying on a paper plate and will probably be able to harvest more as it is still blooming and putting on fruit.
Tonya
Dane, it sure looks like what I have. The fruit is a pretty, deep red when it is ripe. I love the fuzzy feel of the leaves.
Tonya
This is such an interesting thread!
Those are so neat to see in the wild! There isn't much for volunteer seeds around here so I have to enjoy ya'lls. :)
Tonya can I bed for any seeds if you have any left over?
I think I will have plenty of seeds. I have a bunch drying right now and the vine is still cranking out fruit. When they are dry I will try to come back to this thread and contact anyone who expressed an interest in seeds. If you don't hear from me by mid November, feel free to d-mail me.
Dane, I think you need to wait until the fruit turns red before you pick it or the seeds might not be mature enough. You may know that already, but wanted to make sure since you showed a pic of a green fruit.

The big one on the side of the road that I bagged, dissappeared.
The little blue one's fruit started to turn yellow and fell off. I sat it in the window til it was all yellow and soft, opened and the seeds are black and plump. They are almost dry now. Worth a try I think.

Someone obviously had the same idea! All of my PV so far have proved sterile. :(
Well maybe Tonya's will be fertile, we shall see what happens.
I hope they work, too! When y'all say sterile does that mean the fruit has no seeds at all or that the seeds did not germinate?
BTW, I think some are dry enough to mail now. I'll try to get those out soon. I read on a description of a different passiflora that those seeds needed to be sown quickly, since they wouldn't keep. Do y'all think that applies to these, also?
I think I promised seeds to Josephine, Dane and Carey. Anyone else that I promised them to?
Tonya
Yes, sterile means no seeds. You are right, they should be planted soon, I am so glad you got a fertile vine!!! I will dmail you my address.
Josephine.
I don't think you promised me any but I would really like some. Sending you a d-mail for details.
Dane
