Aloe
Aloe striata x maculata

Aloe (Aloe striata x maculata)
this plant looks like it's from a 'mixed marriage'... Aloe striata is supposed to be completely toothless, yet this one has a tad of the maculata in it I am suspecting.... same with the previous photo.
These other photos on this same page are also of this same plant:

Do you also see any differences in the flowers and pods?
no, but often that is the case... flowers and the rest will look identical because there is 'mostly' Aloe striata in this plant. But not 'all' striata since there are teeth on the leaves. Very common for aloes to develop impure progeny if there are any other aloes in the area... though if nothing shows phenotypically, there is nothing else to go by since we aren't to the point yet of doing DNA analysis. But in this case there is a difference and it's the leaves.
So do you think making a notation in the caption about the fact that they are not pure breeds would suffice, Or, should I have them listed on a different entry page? and if so, which entry page?
Xeno,
why not just deleting the photos of this obvious hybrid?
Jordi
Thanks Palmbob for pointing this out. I found three more photos on the web of this striata/maculata hybrid. I'll get them moved to the correct entry page.
Xeno, I too have lots of pics of a striata/maculata hybrid. I was talking to PalmBob about it the other day somewhere on here. A friend has these all over her sideyard and they bloom profusely. I have not seen a wide color fluctuation with them as I have in striatas but I love the speckling on their leaves.
Are there teeth on those leaves?
I had one in a container, but when I transplanted it into the ground, it perished.
I guess the speckling on the leaves comes from the maculata.
I especially like the orange/coral flowers.
A neighbor has these Aloe hybrids in his front yard, of which maybe I will be able to get an offset from him.
yes, that is a nice hybrid, too
