Trumpet Vine, Trumpet Creeper, Cow-Itch Vine (Campsis radicans)
Hello everyone.... Finally at my Mother residents were she has 5 Trumpet Vine plants growing and have flowered for the past 2-3 years. This year I noticed that the flowers were pollinated by bees or some insect. There are about 5 foot long seed pods hanging from the stems. I'm curious about if I should leave them attached to the vine during the winter months or if I should remove them as soon as possible if I want to try collecting the seeds?
Please inform me....
Thank you,
Barry Sewall
I tell you I've harvested pods from my Mother in laws Trumpet vine and I think that they were still green when I picked them but I then let them dry before opening them up or you could just let them dry and turn brown on the vines.
I think I'd just pick them while green and just let them dry before opening.
Thanks ryguy319.... Although out of curiosity did you try growing the seeds after you let the green pods dry out? I'm just wondering if they need to go through a cold winter before they are ready to be planted.... I believe that Wisteria plants need the cold temps before you can germinate the seeds.
Don't know that I never tried to grow them from the seed but did give them away but never heard how they grew. But you know that wouldn't be a bad idea to leave the pods hanging on the vines over winter and then harvest them would be an idea that wouldn't be bad. Or just harvest them now and put them in the refrigerator for stratification.
I'm sorry that i can't be of more help to you.

I have read blogs that trumpet vine is invasive and to get rid of it.
I would like to know if that is true for zone 5.
I have three plants but none bloomed this year got about 8 feet long in growth though
Thanks
Anne
I can agree to the statement that it's invasive alright if you don't keep it under check it can get away from you and grow everywhere. My Mom used to have one and we had little vines coming up all over in that general area but we just mowed them down and they caused no problem. Now my Mother in law has 1 corner of her yard been taken over with them and they actually pushed her fence over where they are laying on it so you do have to keep them trimmed and in control of them or they will take the control.
I've also heard that it is almost impossible to get rid of 1 if you want to that they are hard to kill but never tried. There are a big area of them at my Mother in laws house and we have dug some of them out because there were too many and that is quite the job.
But they are pretty and I think if in the right spot they can be very pretty but if you want to trellis them make sure it is a very very strong trellis because they will break a wood trellis their vines get very thick and woody.
Good luck.

Ok, first off I am not asking any question about the Trumpet Creeper or Trumpet Vine being invasive. If it is, I wish everyone the best of luck if you want to get rid of it.........
If I am interested in growing these Trumpet Vine/Trumpet Creeper vines for a hobby then I am not asking anyone if these plants are a problem for you. All I want to know is how and when to harvest the seed pods. With that much said, does anyone have any idea about doing this? If you do not know for sure, then try not to reply. If you do know, Please give me some feedback.
Thank you.....
Barry
