Closing at Night?

(Zone 7a)

I don't know very much about Brugs. But I have grown them from seed and Root them. There is one I have in particular that is just different from the rest. It's leaf texture, look, and it closes it's leaves at night. It's name is Rhapsody. It was given to me as a gift labeled as such. I have never seen it Bloom so I'm waiting but do they all close at night and I just haven't noticed or is this a sign of preparing to bloom? Any help...Thanks

The first pic is of the one that closes every night. And the second pic is a different Brug right next to it. Which doesn't do this.
Both plants are the same exact size..

It might just be a trait of that brug Kim, I'm just looking out at mine and it is not dark yet but I have one, I think it is Cypress Garden that looks like yours and the rest of mine out there look like your second one.

LOL, I guess I never paid any attention to that before. I do think that one is closer to blooming than the others, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. Maybe someone else will teach us both something. Wouldn't that be cool.

Wow! So different Brugs have different traits? That's neat

LOL, that's the only answer I have for you and there's nothing wrong with them so just appreciate them for what they are I guess.

I find that most brugs do this when they go into sleeping mode. ;-)

Ahhhhhhhhh..figures...some don't need as much sleep?? LOL

Teresa is correct. All Brugs will go into sleep mode. It's a protective mode. The reason some appear not to move their leaves upright could be their age. It's the younger leaves at the tips that do this. It could also be that the broader leaves in your second photo can't physically move to an upright position because of their width. Or they could be too old to do this. Keep an eye on the smaller leaves.

Guess we aren't looking close enough Kim.

Or, maybe it wasn't dark enough for them.

They only close at night when the plant is in a growth phase. When it is in a resting phase there is no change...

Alistair, it's good to see you posting! Does "resting phase" = dormant or do Brugs exhibit "resting phases" between growth spurts instead of slower but continuous growth once they awaken from dormancy? Citrus, for example, grow in spurts

:)

They grow in spurts (which is how they flush), but if course there is no sharply defined resting bud between spurts so resting and growing doesn't look much different - except at night when the growing shoot closes its leaves up.

Very interesting. Thank you Allstair and Veronica. Nice to know.
