What are you planting now? Seeds? Transplants?
Fall vegetable garden
The temperature is going to have to get a little cooler before I think about winter planting.
Our local Farm and Garden store gets plants in usually around the end of Sept. I will then plant lettuce (Mesclun from seeds bought at W/M), cabbage plants and collards.
It is also a good time to plant onions and garlic.
I'm going to do the same as BSD. I already have garlic and onions in the ground, so hopefully I'll be harvesting them in Sept.
have you ever tried to direct sow broccoli and collards? is it too late?
I have successfully grown collards from seed, but haven't tried broccoli. They sell it where I work, so I'm probably going to try it this year.
I will too....hopefully, because collards love cool weather I can get them established before the frost sets in. I had collards to harvest on New Year's day one year.
Well, let me start again. I hit a wrong button and lost all that I had written! You all are getting me in the mood for my first winter garden. I am adding collards and broccoli to my list. Having been reading the vege gardening site, I am glad I don't live in Texas. For those of you in North Carolina, come south to Florence! The heat has been horrible. Even at night. My sister lived here many years ago and said that when you die you either go to Heaven or to Florence. This year has proven it! We have a cold front coming through this weekend and will finally see some 80's and the possibility of 60's at night. Oh, to be able to open my windows again! My home thermometer is usually at least 5 degrees hotter than what is reported. I mainly do container gardening so I think the crops you have talked about will be good in them. Do you have to cover your plants during the winter? We don't have a lot of snow (they close the schools for even a threat of snow) but do get around freezing once in a while. My plan is to keep my lettuce in my portable greenhouses and maybe any tomatoes that I get going. Do you think that will work? As I said, this will be an experiment but the thought of having my fresh things at Christmas is so exciting! Thanks for the help! Marilyn
The only veg plants I can find locally are collards, broccoli, cauliflower, onion sprouts. I've planted thoses. I want to plant garlic, which i can order. But what about lettuce and other vegs? I'm going to have to plant them from seed if I can't find any plants. Any advise on where to look. I'm in rural easter nc, zone 8a.
Check for seeds in the garden center at Walmarts. Also, Lowe's usually carry seed for veggies.
Is anyone growing pumpkins? I don't, but have just discovered there is NO canned pumpkin available in any of the grocery stores I've checked, and the Food Lion manager told me there has been none available since the end of last year because of the "pumpkin shortage." This leads me to wonder if the problem has continued, and if there will even be fresh ones available in the markets this fall.
In addition to his regular dog food, our dog gets a glop of pumpkin from a can, mixed with a lilttle chicken, with every meal. It helps his digestive system and keeps other medical issues he's previously had from recurring. Sure hope I don't end up buying fresh pumpkin, and cooking it for Toby on an ongoing basis, but then again, I may be real happy to find it fresh if canned isn't available in the near future.
Weird.
Our dog recently had abdominal surgery and the pumplin would have helped but you are correct, there is non available anywhere. You can get some orgainc canned pumpkin online but the color, flavor and consistancy leaves much to be desired - think slimy yellow green. I learned that there was a crop failure last summer due to the floods in the midwest. Let's hope for a better crop this year.
