CLOSED: Lone Gull Id

Sandusky, OH

This Gull was the only Gull amongst many Tern's, Egret's and Shorebird's. Have 3 shots...looked to big to be a Bonaparte's and to small for a Ring-billed Gull.

One for size comparison.

I would lean heavily to thinking it is a first winter Bonaparte's Gull

Thanks elageo and OldNed! If I had seen a couple of the Bonapartes Id have made a call on him...but all by himself he kind of threw me off. lol

Ditto to juvenile Bonaparte's Gull (and yes, still a juv., not yet first-winter, as the mantle is still brown-patterned, not grey)

For explanation of this apparent discrepancy - a good part of an adult tern's length is in its tail feathers; these are not full-grown in juveniles. Weight is a better comparison (fledged juvs weigh as much as adults):

Caspian Tern - 650g
Forster's Tern - 160g
Bonaparte's Gull - 200g

Note that Bonaparte's is actually larger and bulkier than Forster's

Thanks Resin for the extra information with the mantle on juvenile Bonaparte's. All the extra information I receive from this forum gets added to my field guide. Would love to teach birdwatching in my area...this is all very helpful to me. ;)
