Never plant X next to Y - your thoughts?

Please solve for X and Y. LOL

I'm filling my new garden box and have a mix of stuff to plant -- things I grew in pots this spring (peppers, tomatoes); starts from the nursery, and a few things I'd like to try from seed.
I don't want to make unhappy neighbors, so I'm looking for any tips on what to plant near (or far away from) what, or if it makes a difference with these particular plants.

I have:
cucumber (1)
tomatoes (several, and I have already put some into the garden, the rest are in pots)
zucchini (1)
scallop squash (1)
yellow squash (1)
broccoli (6-pack)
cauliflower (6-pack)
peppers (4 or 5, all in pots right now)
marigolds (4, planted already in front corners of the box)

If there's any room left, I'll be trying beets, kohrabi and Swiss chard from seeds (just a couple of each) When weather cools, I'd like to plant lettuce and radishes.

I have only one deep 4' x 8' garden box but it is deep (16" sides) and I am doing the square foot garden thing with pretty intensive planting, so 32 squares. The tomatoes are mostly indeterminates that I am tethering to a fence, or they are patio/container type. I figure that squashes can go on outside squares so the vines can wander.

Other than that, I'm open to what goes in the middle, and if something from the list won't work in the box, I can relegate it to a pot for now (until we get garden box #2 going). I grew cauliflower and broccoli in pots last year and they worked but were "mini-heads." If I'd had bigger pots or a garden bed, the resulting heads would have been bigger.

The only thing I consider is the size of plant. Small plants get bullied and covered up by large plants. I just give each plant sufficient space to have access to nutrients, water, and sunlight. There are a few vegetable plants which have high water requirements, celery for example. Those do better in a low spot.

Ditto to Farmerdill, and while planting the squash etc. on the outside to "wander" sounds logical, will you still be able to get to whatever is planted "inside" ?

Melons wander. Squashes SPREAD!
