water plants

Arlington, TX

This is the first time I will have a full sun pond and I am wondering what water plants do well here. I would like to try a small lotus but need some suggestions for other floaters and submerged species that can live outside all year. I used water lettuce and water hyacinth but those are both banned in TX.

I like horsetail reed, as long as you keep it in a submerged container so it doesn't take over! :)

It has a bonus effect of attracting lots of dragonflies.

Louisiana Iris and creeping jenny both do well in full sun.

I have these three that I can give you starts of at the RU, or you can come over and get them anytime.

I have lemon bacopa that I can share. It likes full sun. May have a couple of other things but will have to investigate.

It's a small pond so I have to be careful. Do you know of any stores that might carry a few of the plants mentioned?

taro and papayrasa will also will do well along with umbrella plant but will have to be brought in for the winter as they are tender...

The sweet flag is well behaved and is a bright color to add. Mine were all gifted from other DGs along the way so don't have any idea were to purchase. I would imagine Green Mamas might have water plants.

My local Lowe's has water plants. If there's one near you, you might check there.

purslane, tho tending to be invasive, has bright cheerful flowers, can live in moist ground and the turtles chomp it down by the gutful...but you have a sun pond, arrowhead,(sagittarius), pickerel weed, love those sweet flags, they add texture and behave well. Crinum lillies do well in sun/water too

I have about 25-30 little goldfish that need a new home. Last year managed to raise 5 goldfish which are all about 1/2 pound now. Well, they did what they do and I have about 30-40 babies. Terrible strain on my pond as it is too small to support that many. We have had a terrible week trying to keep everybody alive. DH is wanting to put the babies in a plastic bag with water and put them in the freezer. If I don't have another solution soon that may be my only choice. Would like to have just the 5 from last year. Anyone want some goldfish???? please, please, please. I'm at the point where I either do euthanasia or just let everybody die. Not my idea of a good solution.

I can sneak in 10-12 Christy. Will you be coming this way anytime soon?

My life has gone from good to bad in a very short period. :( {{{ Christi }}} We'll get through it.

I wish I could help you with the baby goldfish, but my pond's devoted to tadpoles now. I miss my goldies, but I never had toads until I gave up the fish, and I'm afraid bringing back the fish would cause my toads to disappear. We need them for skeeter control.

Christi....maybe you can get a pet store to take them. I know I used to raise zebra finches and whenever they were old enough to eat by themselves they would take them.

Thank all of you for your suggestions. Today we visited assisted living locations for MIL. Not enough time in a day to take care of everything. People come first, of course. If it would ever cool down a bit maybe the fish would be ok.
