Another species split (winter wrens)

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

"Winter Wren" Troglodytes troglodytes has been split into three species:

Eurasian Wren Troglodytes troglodytes (Europe, Asia)
Eastern Winter Wren Troglodytes hiemalis (eastern North America)
Western Winter Wren Troglodytes pacificus (western North America)

Apparently Eastern and Western birds overlap in northeastern British Columbia without interbreeding. The strangest fact though is that Eastern Winter Wren is more closely related to Eurasian Wren, than it is to Western Winter Wren.

I'll edit the BirdFiles entries over the next day or so; if you have wren pics there, don't be surprised if you get a message saying your photos have been reallocated!

BirdFiles done! There was less to do than I expected.

Down side is that there's no photos of either Eastern Winter Wren or Western Winter Wren yet (all the photos were Eurasian Wrens, from Britain). Anyone got some? If yes, please add them!

Western Winter Wren http://davesgarden.com/guides/birdfiles/go/2934/

If you're not sure which, it is fairly safe to decide by location of the photo (the overlap area is very small):

Eastern Winter Wren - anywhere east of the Rocky Mts

Western Winter Wren - anywhere west of the Rocky Mts

Thanks!
