Do any of Y'all grow Achemenes ??This is my my favorite porch plant ,this strain has been in our family for many generations...will put some more pix later
Achemenes
Sorry about that last one but from the thumbnail it look like what I wanted
Beautiful. What is the vine covering at least half of the area?
Lou that is a Sweet Autunm Clematis it is considered a native by some "experts" and not by others ..But whatever it is it is beautiful ,,will bloom in late August or early September and I will send a pix then IF the blister beetles don't get it ..Already had one go round with them ...year before last they killed a fine Asao clematis before I even knew they were there...
OMGosh! what ever in the world do you feed it? I have one little clematis and bloomed ok this spring but has been dormant ever since. 101 today and expected to be up to 105 all week. Could be part of my problem. I have never, ever seen one with that many leaves. Wonderful.
Last week I had to cut it back it had intruded into the opening for the porch it has only been there for 2 yrs before it was in the exact center of the back yard and block off any sight lines so was forced to move it ..There is at least 20 or more of those in our neighborhood
Grits, I grow achemenes and just love them. I had my first plant courtesy of my mom in the 60's and it hung under the eaves of an east facing wall. Didn't have any until recently. It is hard to find the tiny tubers anywhere and my daughter asked her nurseryman to order some. They are of the purple variety just like your pic. Any tips on helping them thrive?
Diggin I have a bit of knowledge on Achemenes due to the fact I have killed a lot more than I have ever grown ..I got my first one many years as a gift from my Mother In Law and it did fair right up till it got knocked over into a pan of boiling water ..And the tragedy kept right on until one summer the light bulb finally stayed on ...now here it is way to cold for them in the winter so I dig all the tubers that are in the larger of my planters LET them DRY and store in a cool place ..My potted ones I put in the attic but must check on them anytime after the first of the year ..When they get ready to sprout they do it no matter where or how dark it is ..Then have to water and find somewhere for them to be untill frost danger is past..Okay now for the good part this year I will have lots of tubers to share..So just keep in touch and I will see that Y'all get some for starters
Thanks, count me in, I will send postage money. I just have a little pot with about 3 plants in it. Those little tubers are so tiny and it is easy to throw them out if you are not very careful.
I did not know about keeping over the winter like you do. In Houston, south of here, they can be grown in the ground and can be amazing. Here we have colder temps and I will try what you do in letting them dry in their pot and keep them in proper temps so the tubers can't freeze. Thanks for the info. They are one of my favorite plants.
I gave my sister one recently as she lives in Conroe but pretty sure it is a goner by now she has what the rest of the family refers to as Black Thumb
Your Achemenes is beautiful! I would love some bulbs. Just let me know when you have some to share and I will send postage money.
stetchworth, good to hear from you and thank you for offering me some of yours. They are beautiful!
I have learned over the last 5-6 years that a "green thumb" comes at the end of "elbow grease", and lots of it.
LouC, you are so right!
My mother always said that a green thumb is just another way of saying aching back>>>Stetchworth would you like to trade some blue for some puple....And where is Ocean Springs ..Got lots of Cuz in Ms. around Hot Coffee
Lou the blister beetles are after the Clematis so I sprayed them this morning after the spray from yesterday got wash off by a downpour, but I did see abunch of those nasty critters that crawled out onto the walkway and were dying ...I hate Blister bugs
grits74571, your mom is right too!I had a beautiful Clematis; however, for some reason it did not come back after our extremely cold winter. I do not know why it didn't survive.
grits74571, I have the purple ones it is the white I am looking for, remind me in the late fall I should be able to send you a couple of blue. Ocean Springs is next door to Biloxi.
Just a quick update on the state of my Blister Beetles ,I had to go to the west coast for 2 weeks and during my absence the blister bugs had a field day with everything so am now trying to get them under control spraying 2x each day UGH
Lou the Clematis is blooming but i am kinda waiting until it is perfect to get a pic online
It is time to harvest the Achemenes tuber so far looks like I will have lots of tubers to share...So keep in touch
Grits, my little pot of achimenes is beginning to look puny. Should I quit watering them so I can dig the tubers soon? I am very interested in more tubers. I will keep an eye on this forum so I can send postage when you are ready. Thanks, lovediggin
Be very aware of afternoon sun they just don't like it if the leaves are turning brown around the edges that is a pretty sure sign of sun burn most of mine ( about 12 pots and planters ) get very little direct sun...
grits Yes, I'm keeping the pot in the shade. When do you decide to dig the tubers?
lovediggin as long as they are still healthy looking leave them be just let them go until frost is expected I am slowly harvesting mine as frost can occur most any day now up here...
grits, Thanks
One of the readers of this thread sent me money for postage and it is way to much her name is May Belle, so May if you read this, please reply so I can find out if there is anything else I happen to have that I could share with you...Joe(grits) Blackwell

grits, I just sent a d-mail
I just relied to the D mail from Lovediggin but forgot to mention that I wish everyone that wants Achemenes would post pictures on the pictures thread..Not a deal breacker but it would be nice
The tubers are all ready if anyone wants some just send a SASE to Joe Blackwell PO Box 653 Talihina Ok. 74571...There are some that are broken but I find it makes no diference to the Achemenes ..So Far I am thinking that about 10 per envelope and that way I should have enough to share with everyone ....
