short absynnian (Sp?) banana tree

Seattle, WA

I've had this plant since last summer. It was in my greenhouse all winter where it wanted to go through the roof ...6' or so. So I planted it in the tropical garden in June. And of course it didn't turned summer in Seattle until July. When I did planted I added bone meal, compost, regular potting soil it was in, stretch out the roots etc... and took off the dead , dying leaves and planted it about 2 1/2 ft into the ground... Since then the leaves are coming in are about 4 to 5 ft long. It gets watered twice a day and fed twice a week.... But its still shorter than me!!! And I'm 5' 5"!!!! It gets full sun from morning til sun down. So why is it still short??? And I checked the label it did not say dwarf and I had another banana in the same spot last year and it grew to about 8 feet....(I don't remember when this growth spurt happen..had to happen after I built and planted the garden in the last week of July.. It didn't die until late November. So any ideas???

I don't believe you have anything to worry about. I presently don't have an abby, but w/ regards to my other bananas, I have them in all sizes (same variety) regardless of the care & maint. some are more sluggish than others. I don't think there is a dwarf abby.

I think you've done everything a good banana parent should do.

I don't understand what you mean by you "planted about 2 1/2' into the ground". I agree with vossner that some bananas are always going to grow on their own schedule but when I plant bananas I follow the usual rule to not plant it any deeper than it was growing in the pot. Did you have this plant in a very deep (2 1/2') pot?

Or, am I not planting my bananas correctly???????

ardesia, u r so sharp. I didn't read the part about 2.5 ft or 30" deep. that would be way too deep! planting as deep as it was in the pot is the correct way.

Yes the pot was 24 inches tall. There were lots of roots where it was circling the pot so I wanted to 'spread" those out and about. I was adding soil admendments plus the soil the plant lived in addition to the soil it was planted in.

My other bananas (I believe are Chinese Yellow) Are as tall as me...

I also have dwarf Cavendish and they are a little shorter than my other bananas, but I expect that!!!

I just hate it that its August already....winter is around the corner...unless we have an Indian summer and no one can predict that!

Now about my windmill palms....
