Amorphophallus konjac Shattered Glass

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I first bought this tuber from eBay over 2 years ago. It never came up. Last year I bought it again, being lured by its great variegation. The seller sent me an extra bulb because the first one failed to come up. Both are now making their appearance.

They are so slow though! My Amorphophallus Konjac 'Nightstick and also Leo's Song are up and big! They are in full sun, these I have in more shade because they were so small. Maybe I should move them out a bit.

And on another note. My Titans are dying back. How should I care for them? Anyone know? Should I withhold all water? I have killed 2 of these so far so really want to keep these alive. The Konjacs are so easy! They grow in the garden here year round but this one is ch pickier.

Is it odd they are dying back in July? They have been so robust. I have kept them under my sky lights in my dining room on advice of the UC Botanical Garden where I bought them. Here they will not grow outside preferring a greenhouse.

Some of the Amorphos in my yard are dying back too, the kind that are like a single swirl and don't make bulbs on top (you can tell I am not an amorpho expert LOL) . I think it may be because of the intense heat here, it hit 98F today (again, it hit 99 at my house yesterday) and the fact we haven;t had rain for 10 days til today when we got a massive 4 hour T-storm. Hose water just doesn;t cut it, I think mine are browning from heat stress

Titans aren't bound to the annual cycle. So they can come or go or flower at any time. Mine grew from late last winter through summer. Now it's coming into late winter again and it's still going strong, no sign of going dormant. It lives out in the garden and deals with the day to day weather quite well. It's under a tree which allows good filtered sunlight. I'm counting on it going dormant in mid summer and probably emerging again in winter.

Other amorphs I've got are bound to that annual cycle. They might emerge early and go dormant a bit late, but they're still regulated by summer/winter (wet/dry) seasons. A lot of them come from hot dry winter and hot wet summer seasons. So if it gets dry while it's hot they react as if it's winter (dry season) and start to go dormant.

These are some of the same variety in habitat (in the wild). Not quite as big, but there's no one out there to water and fertilise them.

Hi Jim. Sounds like you are gathering a nice collection! How much sun do you give them inside? Too bad eBay screwed you. If you paid for it with your credit card you should be able to get your money back. Paypal will refund it too.

WOW tropicbreeze, your Amorphophallus paeoniifolius is so cool! I would love one so big! What do you feed yours and how often?

I bought 2 bulbs on eBay early 2010. One came up but the other hasn't. I didn't label them so I do not know which one came up.

What should I do with the other bulb that has not come up. I felt down and it is still there and hard. Anyway to get it going? Maybe it is not hot enough here.

Does this look like an Amorphophallus Paeoniifolius or an Amorphophallus Koratensis? The stem is not mottled like pics I have seen of both of them. Anyone know?
